Christchurch Recovery: On Track?

Postby E Dogg Capizzle on Thu 21/Jul/11 12:10pm

A new survey shows that increasingly people are doubtful about the course of the recovery.

I'm sure it's going great. I mean, we're paying Jenny Shipley and her three mates over a grand a day, so it must be going well...........

Yeah, I reckon if Phil Goff was in charge he would have personally gnawed the Grand Chancellor down with his teeth.

It's subjective, one person in Merivale that hasn't been effected at all would say its excellent, where as someone in Wainoni that has lost everything with little help would say its terrible.

But don't worry, Jabba the Hut will make everything better :)

Pretty much? I mean, there's suburbs, roads and a CBD to be built, plus a bunch of demolition before that starts in the first place, and the economic climate is pants. All this needing to be started at the drop of a hat without warning. Plus we're a tiny country that doesn't have a big pool of labour and skills to draw from other places around the country to get to work fixing things/paying for things. The eathquakes have lost a bunch of people their jobs and income further depressing the economy. Most places that weren't catastrophically damaged are more or less back to normal in less than 5 months. The situation sucks for a lot of people, but how could we really expect things to be that much better?

I've been out of the house since September and now the insurance company won't talk to me as I'm in the "Red Zone" Tried to explain to them that they put me in this magical "Red Zone" two weeks ago but I put my claim in 10 months ago. No help. I'm now in the pool of the "Red Zone" as I'm easier to manage that way. What recovery ? And don't get me started about the fuckin CBD !

Its about this much on track.

Ok sewers are getting fixed, but starting to think EQC is some kind of internet conspiracy, city is still fooked, demolition is progressing but not for the big buildings, no real plan or idea and I'm in the white zone so were well and truly shafted for ages yet.

My only comment would be to define "recovery".
It's basically impossible as outlined by previous posters. What works for someone wont work for someone else.
Its going to take a long time for EQC to get to everyone but now that the areas have been defined into zones, I think that things will move along a lot faster.
As far as the CBD goes, I'm not too sure what the perceived problems are there. There are a lot of buildings coming down before anything can go up.
Do people actually realise how massive the task is?

It seems to be going well for the insurance companies, which managed to socialize a huge chunk of cost on the vague promise by the govt that they would recover the money somehow.

It seems to working ok for the port who managed to get their land reclamation project through without any inconvenient interference from the pesky Environment court..

Seems to have done ok so far for Fletcher Building.

I'd say as far as Jabba is concerned its going very well...

I own a house which is now likely to be worth a whole lot less than it was a year ago. Will that ever recover?
