Inspiring Riding: Bicycle Powered Adventures

Postby honeymonster on Wed 15/Jun/11 9:51pm

I thought I'd make this post to link to updates to my journal. Find it here:

http://www.inspiring-riding.co.nz/

I write about bicycle adventures, big or small:
I want mountain bikers to ride unfamiliar trails outside of the groomed bike parks, to pack up some luggage and stay out overnight, or to head off on a longer bikepacking trip and experience the excitement and calm of a self-sufficient backcountry ride. I want people to use the vast network of recreational cycle trails and quiet rural roads to visit interesting places, meet interesting people, and use their bike to explore our beautiful country. I want parents to experience the joy of their children learning to ride a bicycle and finding the freedom to explore that only a bicycle can offer.I want commuters to cycle in style around their town or city, experiencing the sights, sounds and smells dulled by the isolation of car travel.

There are a few articles on their right now to kick off. I'll add new articles weekly.

Your description above sounds very poetic!
Of course there's more to biking than that including getting cold and wet, close shaves with myopic car drivers etc...

But if you're focusing on the warm fuzzies there's a nice saying I remember about riding motorbikes, same applies to bicycles I guess:
If travelling in a car makes you feel like you are watching a movie, riding a bike makes you feel like you are in the movie.

So here we go again, another Inspiring Riding journal post:

This one is 'gear freaky', something to do with a bike gaining consciousness.

Enjoy.

A couple of weeks ago I had to go back to the UK at short notice. In the time between getting over jet lag, sorting family business and flying back home to Wellington I managed to squeeze in a couple of days riding (it was summer after all!).

Here is the inspiring riding post that resulted...

Welsh trails and summer sunshine!

I'm not sure why I found myself digging through an old box of photos at the weekend, I got distracted too many forgotten memories and whatever reason I started with disappeared into an afternoon of faded images. I found a few old riding pictures, and the original brochure for my first mountain bike. It made me think a little about riding back when everything was new and everything was an adventure...

Fantastic.

I often detour on the way home.

Welli is getting so many new opportunities for linking dirt into the commute.

Great writing and photos. Well done and inspiring stuff. Liked how you made the familiar new and interesting with the photos of tents on the top of makara hill. You said in one blog that you felt guilty not helping digging. No need to, you bring your own vision and work to mountain biking, from a different angle. This adds to mountain biking as much as 1 hour on a grubber. As someone wiser than me said. Do what you love and do it well.

You've just brought a tear to my eye. Honestly you have.
Thanks for the kind words, I'm just pleased that someone reads it and gets something out of it.

I've actually just inspired myself to do that ride to work tomorrow, and Thursday, and Friday too!
There are things much better for the soul than sweating over work.

Something a little different this time. Not an adventure, but something to provoke thought, discussion, reflection, whatever. A new inspiring-riding post and a new page on the website to differentiate it from the adventure stuff:
