Port Hills Road Riding - Post Earthquake

Postby mfw on Mon 21/Mar/11 3:01pm

OK the MTB'ers have got this are-the-port-hill-still-closed-t107201.html but what about the roadies?

According to CCC the following roads are open:

1. Mt Pleasant, access from:
- Cave Tce / Moncks Spur Rd
- Glenstrae
- Cannon Hill Cres / Major Hornbrook

2. Summit rd from Mt Pleasant Rd to Evans pass

3. Evans pass to Lyttleton on Old Sumner Lyttleton Rd (unsealed?)

4. 'Short bays' bays roads

5. Dyers pass from both directions

Which means you could do a hill loop by stringing together 1 to 5 if you can find a way to get scramble down from Evans pass Old Sumner Lyttleton Rd (in roadie shoes  ) and then at the bottom patch your way through Lyttleton.

Anyone know if this is possible, and what the surface of Old Sumner Lyttleton Rd is like?

Failing that it just leaves Dyers, which is better than nothing. :D

Didn't GUB say that the Bastard is open? So that would allow for variations down that end (South Short Bays?)?

old sumner road is pretty rough dirt (not even shingle) - wouldn't want to take a roadie on it.

why not just do the 'alternative' short bays (the dyers/kiwi/govs/gebbies/bastard loop) - it's all good. Ditto the purau loop instead of long bays.

Agreed, Bastard is red.

they're showing ALL the summit rd from top of mt pleasant rd right thru to gebbies pass closed - that was true a couple of weeks back, but I know the kiwi/rapaki section is now open (closed just from mt pleasant back to there now), and similarly they'd relaxed the other direction (road is definitely open as far as the bellbird)

Kiwi to the top of the Bastard has been open for a while. I know of a couple of folk who rode the Bastard on the weekend and didn't have to break any road blocks to do it so I think that is OK too.

From what I have gleaned from riders using Summit Road recently:
Evans Pass to Mt Pleasant Road OPEN
Mt Pleasant Road to Sign of Kiwi CLOSED - still a boulder field especially by Gondola area
Sign of Kiwi to Gebbies Pass - OPEN (with care - a few dents and holes)
Take Care
We've got some nice hills in this weekends race at Cust for those suffering withdrawal symptoms (Summerhill and Ashley Gorge each twice)

The road up to the Kiwi is fine as is the Summit Rd from Rapaki (where it is closed) through to the Bastard. Some evidence of rockfall on the sides, but OK.
