Dinner Stops - North Of Wellington

Postby way_downsouth on Wed 16/Mar/11 9:41am

Yo, it has been ages since I have driven North from Wellington on a Friday night after work, and I don't know where to stop for a good dinner on the way.

Will be leaving town around 5:30pm (yay for traffic) and working up SH1 to Waiouru before heading towards Ohakune/National Park.

The kebab shop in Bulls used to be a favourite stop, and it was about the right time normally, but I have had reports that it is no longer worth the stop.

Any vorbers out there got suggestions of a good place to stop on the way North?

I normally stop at Taihape - usually somewhere reasonable to eat on the main drag. Early mornings on ski trips Maccas in Taihape is the usual haunt - quick and stodgy with an awesome ski slope mural right next to the counter to get you in the mood.

That said, went to the kebab shop in Bulls a few months ago and it was fine still...

Just after the left hand turn at Sanson there is a bright yellow cafe on the right hand side of the road. Not sure if they're open for dinners, but bloody good food in there. The coffee was unfortunately not worth stopping for, but the bacon and egg butties......mmmmm.......

Jabies is the awesome Bulls kebab shop. It was just fine when I patronised it in Jan.

The big one is ridiculous.

I think that we might just take the risk. That, or call into an awesome numbered house in Cannons Creek.

Coffee at the Streetwise cart in Sanson. Best coffee in NZ.
Should get you through to the exchange cafe in Taihape.

+1 for that, Jabies is brilliant. Can make it healthy if you so wish too.

For dinner, Bulls or epic fail.

But, srsly? You're PLANNING to leave Wellington at 5.30pm on A FUCKING FRIDAY?! Are you retarded?
Either work it in so you can leave before 4, or don't leave until 7. Otherwise you'll end up sitting in traffic for at least an hour, and will spend another 45 minutes doing not much more than 60... Likely slow/crawling the way to at least Otaki.
