What Happened To All The Fish And Chip Shops In Chch?

I have now ridden through a lot of suburbs during my modified commuting and I am staggered by the number of fish and chip shows that have fallen to bits in the earthquake

So much so that I now have a theory that the fumes from chip pans must be weakening the buildings

Does anyone have a better explanation :ib:

They probably like to build 'em in mostly brick/concrete type buildings due to the hotass oil being an epic fire risk. Concrete/brick buildings get totally fucked in earthquakes (as you've probably guessed by now...)

My observations match with mfw - known F&C shop demises;

Bowhill Road (near Keyes) - instant pile of rubble on the ground
Pages Road (at Breezes Road intersect) - western wall fell off
Centaurus Road (just west of Colombo) - fenced off awaiting demolition (already half-jiggered on Sept 4)

My theory is that there are a lot more double skin brick buildings around Chch (and many other NZ towns & cities) than anyone would ever have guessed if asked before Sept 4 / Feb 22.

And there have been some seriously worrying failures on some modern buildings I've seen on eastern side of Chch (eg; Eastgate Mall - large bits of tilt-slab wall off the Farmers & Warehouse boxes).
