A New Track At Makara Peak !!

Postby Robbie on Wed 26/Jan/11 9:07am

This Sunday , Jan 30th, we start building from the summit of Makara Peak to the start of North Face.

Tentatively named TNT, this track has been designed as an intermediate all-weather track, using part of Zac’s Track then heading off across the hill towards North Face.

We will also be modifying the top end of Zac’s to make it more fun, not as steep and more sustainable.

This is the final piece of the North Face Project, comprising TNT, North Face itself, JFK ( which will be finished in about a month), and Smokin’.

Over 3 kilometres of sweet flowing single track

Here is the map, we will be starting on the part marked in RED:

Why not come along and lend a hand? Track building is fun, and not just for blokes. Women and not-too-small children can also have a go.

It is also a great social occasion with a bit of digging thrown in :)

Drop in for 30 minutes or all day- we will be very happy to see you and provide friendly advice and guidance, with tools supplied and a feed around lunchtime!

The Makara Peak Supporters will be there from 10am: you will spot wheelbarrows, piles of tools, and people digging a track right by the summit!

Cheers,

Rob

You mean less fun

And how is zacs even steep at the moment? Most of zacs is more or less flat...

Zacs is perfect at the moment.

I don't see why people just don't ride down the 4wd track to the start of Northface, totally unecessary piece track I would've though, surely...

Zacs is perfectly sustainable as it is, given that its made mostly out of rock.

Why not just build a small link from Zacs up to the road just below the start of Northface.

It would be silly to debate track design on Vorb.

Its called "dumbing down a track" this often happens when people find a track they want to ride but struggle with it.

Im with Robbie with NorthFace needing a better enterance, i am not fussed if the beginning of Zacs needs to be "dumbed down" to help provide this. So long as Ridgeline is left alone i'm all good :)

Would the original start of Zac's still be retained?

At the summit?
For a while, yes.

However over time the track will be made less steep and longer: this is to both reduce maintenance (which is a critical point) and bring the track to intermediate standard.

The top section is by far the steepest part of Zac's.. and as you can see from the map the track will loop back and forward, and probably be cut right through the existing bit.

Changing tracks always upsets some and pleases others, and this is weighed up with track maintenance needs and riding standards.. ;)

Maintenance I get, but 'riding standards' is confusing. How would you describe the current standard, and what standard are you aiming for?
