Epic Race Needed

Postby crazychris on Mon 24/Jan/11 8:45am

OK, so Logan and I are starting to get back into the tandem riding. We've been doing the Duathlon, and it has proven that I hate running (in fact it causes shin splints or something ultra painful after just 3km) and Logan hates being on the road.

So, we've done Molesworth Muster and Rainbow Rage and now we're looking for another adventure to take on. Preferably in Canterbury as we both have families who demand of our time, but would be open to suggestions outside of the area.

An idea I have not yet mooted with him is to do a round-trip of the Otago Rail Trail and make it a fundraiser for Guide Dogs or similar. 300km in a day sounds achievable right? The mad brevet buggers were doing that in the hills! We could tie it in with the Classic in September even. Race there, ride back.

I have done the Run 79 (now 77) race a few times, but the date never works out for the both of us.

So, what's on offer? Where would you do an epic tandem MTB race with a blind man?

I asked last time about McLeans (we do the 10km in under 28mins) but the organiser preferred us not to enter. Didn't say no, just wrung his hands and stared at his shoes and mumbled a lot.

The bugger wouldn't get off the bike during the hike sections I bet!

But, we've done rainbow and molesworth, looking for something new! Preferably downhill rather than up as well :)

Hmm... maybe pass to pub? Hmmm... maybe just pub?

Pass to Pub is good. It did not count as Epic, so I did not suggest it.

We used to park in Fairlie, ride up to Burkes Pass, race down, have a couple of beers, ride back to the car in Fairlie.

gut buster in central otago, bit further to travel but you could take the family and make a weekend of it. Plus it meets the critera of finishing at a pub.

There is also the mt somers race but just not that epic.

doesn't have to be flat, just prefer not to have a 10km uphill slog :D
Motatapu is too soon (and entries closed now) and Kaiwara is even sooner. I'll add these to next years list tho.

I have been on tandems uphill. 2 Fit and fast guys individually still do not make for a fast uphill tandem... Gawd they fly on the downhills tho!!

We have overtaken people on the downhills when we've had the brakes on, and they have been peddling as hard as they can. We did almost 70kph on Kennedys Bush before we got the disk brakes installed. Logan is keen to go faster :o Tandem downhills are thrilling, but uphills suck so very very badly.

There's a race through the rail trail. I can't find the date though. I think it's sometime in Spring?
