Does kind of suck. I want to know who the fuck this "renumeration authority" answers to. PM said "Don't give us a pay rise" and then they did anyway...... The fuck is that all about?

They should freeze MP's salaries at no more than 4x the mean national wage for the PM, 3x for cabinet ministers/leader of the opposition, and 2x for the backbenchers. That would be more than generous I reckon. And would give them a bloody good reason to actually do shit to increase everybodys wellbeing, rather than just that of their rich mates.

1.4% is a lot when they're already earning heaps, the country is borrowing 250 million a week to stay afloat, and loads of other public service folk aren't getting raises or are losing their jobs.

1.4% is a lot when most people are being told there is no money for a pay rise this year (or last year come to that).

Also the rise has been backdated in a way that has been refused to others in the public service.

With my partner being a secondary teacher being expected to do more (and belive me having a few more kids in each class creates a lot of extra work) while being told there is no money for pay rises this grates a bit.

And lets not even start on Chris Carter expecting to have his Xmas holiday on the taxpayers dime.

:withstupid:
Given that a mate of mine has just had his job restructured out from under him a few days before Christmas, with a wife & kids to feed, I'm right out of patience with these idjits and their shenanigans. I wouldn't shoot them though, just taser them repeatedly until they learn to stop feathering their own nests :satan:

to be fair (and I do hate being fair to the pollies) they have no say over what the Remuneration Authority does as it's statutorily independent body.

They could, if they chose, donate the salary increaseto charity. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

To put it in perspective the Judiciary got a much bigger pay-hike. 3.7 - 4.3%. The Chief Justice is now on $450k a year and that's 50K more than what the Prime Minister gets.

Pay peanuts = Get Monkeys (cue monkey noises)

I don’t begrudge them. It takes a lot of effort to be even a back bencher, they work hard and if they were doing what they do in the private sector its likely they’d be paid more.

:( Unfortunately it does smack of gross hypocrisy when as other posters have said people are losing their jobs, working more for no raises etc.

FYI the period covered for MP salary determinations has always been July - June. Generally the decision is made at the end of the year so the change is always backdated.

So technically this pay adjustment only runs for another 6 months

Sorry, but being an MP shouldn't be about the money at all. I expect the most effective MPs are those who don't care much about the money, but are there because they believe in what they are doing.

Also, catman, suuuuuure, what are the chances of them ever getting a pay CUT though? :D I seriously doubt, even if the economy is in worse shape, that they'll get a cut next time it's assessed or in fact ever. What they need to do is tie their salaries to an indicator of economic performance - such as the average wage. If they improve shit for the country = their pay goes upsies, but if they make giant booboos or spend the whole time pandering to their rich mates then pay goes waaaay down.

Stop your bleating and do something about it if you are not happy. 1.4 pc is equal to most govt departments pay rises this year.

And how does Sir propose that I do something about an independent body that doesn't even listen to the PM when he says "don't give us a raise"?
