Roadie Gatherings - Unaware Or Arrogant ?

Postby pedalingkiwi on Thu 2/Dec/10 9:00pm

OK - here's the thing. Every tuesday morning a large bunch of road cyclists gather at the kerb outside the entrance to my workplace (Princess Margaret Hospital in Chch) Or to be more precise they congregate - on the kerb, on the footpath, on the road, and when observed last week, approx 15 of them were standing around (with bikes) all over one lane of an intersection. They just seem to think - "cause we are not riding we can congregate 4 & 5 & 6 abreast", and show no concern for anyone else who may want to a) park at that kerb, b) exit that access to the hospital.

Now, I'm a cyclist as well (commuter + mtbike) but I'm just trying to this work out - are these guys & gals just plain unaware that it LOOKS like they don't give much consideration to other road or footpath users OR is it in fact the case that they actually don't give a shit about other road or footpath users at this particular junction in our roading / street system ?? (to be fair this area is not in high use by pedestrians, so impact on footpath use is likely to be minimal - but it is a high vehicle traffic area)

The icing on the cake for a "just plain arrogant" interpretation of behaviour is that it is common that before the bunch departs a number of the male cyclists will wander over to an area of planting / shrubbery and proceed to flop the sausage & empty their bladder in view of anybody passing by. NZ is not a terribly prudish place thank goodness, but seriously - do cyclists think the act of urinating in such a public place does the image of receational or competitive cycling any good ??

Just asking.

I've seen the same thing. It's the same mob mentality as Harley Davidson riding douchebags, but even more queer.

Get the cops involved, maybe that will help them pull their heads in.

Arrogant.

No one is stupid enough that they would be unaware of the potential impact of such actions.

why don't you ask them/tell them what you think?
the behaviour is shit clearly.
I'm not sure what asking the question here is going to achieve.
(unless one of the aforementioned tossers is a vorbii  )

Or, next Monday night, go put a big annonymous note on a nearby wall; From a cyclist, to those particular other cyclists, telling them that they're being chumps.

It gives us something to post about, and reinforces stereotypes about dirty stinking roadies.

thanks a heap for taking this seriously Oli :p

I was just curious what the vorbii consensus is - will just try to talk to the blighters. My plan is to venture forth and see if I can't have a decent conversation with said peeples next tuesday am (though I've just realised that numbers might be down immediately after Festival of Cycling)

Isn't that the Tuesday morning (self called) World Champs ride? Not that that is an excuse. Al Bushy is a sometime contributor.
