For my 5+ hour ride I will use 4 bottles. I know I would struggle to do the distance on three, and last year carrying the third one in my pocket just made my back really sore. I thought I would need 5 bottles last year, I only used 4, having filled up at the 4th stop.
This year I will be taking 2 with me and will be stopping to refill at the 3rd support station, which is only just over 70km into the ride, but it suits my plan best.

God, I hate this discussion - it pops up every year. :(

Depends on your fitness levels, speed you ride at, and tolerance for getting dehydrated. I'd do it with 2 bottles of sugary water with some salt popped in.

The faster guys will get by with 2 x 750ml bidons of sports drink, slower guys need to stop for fish n chips & 1.5l of coke at Turangi in addition to a support vehicle carrying 10 bottles of Mizone for them & 20 Moro bars because they "give you more go".

Just carry a long straw, sip from the lake as required.
