Hi!..

Between CHCH and Auckland you have

Christchurch MTBing, im sure some DH down there
Nelson, has some good DH im told
Wellington, Makara & Long Gully are probably your best options
Upper Hutt, Maidstone area
Napier, not sure about Eskdale if it has much DH?
Taupo, again not sure of the DH around Taupo.
Rotorua, Redwoods area, tons of stuff
Auckland again, lots around

Upper Hutt has a huge network of trails for Motorcross riders as well through the Akatarawas,

Yep, upper Hutt good, but not sure about Hire in Wellington

You can hire touristy Enduro MX bikes in Rotorua and CHCH(WR's etc) and Nelson has a trials and enduro riding set up if I remember right?

I'd recommend best option for s good day MXing is Thundercross? MX bike park towards Auckland (look it up). I remember seeing hire bikes there a while back. Pretty fun place for an all round thrill. Most of the other options are guided tours, which could be gay if stuck with a bunch of noobies.

Yep definitely bring bike if can.

Eh, no real DH around Taupo, there's coles killer, but it's not very fun having to pull a 18kg downhill bike uphill for 20 minutes for a 4 minute downhill run, and there is also the budda, which if your quite fast can do sub 1 minute, for DH i'd recommend going to Rotorua.

Mr Thing One is a multiple mountain bike National Champion.

For a small fee a guided ride with him could be arranged. PM him for details.

From the camper point of view. There are often good one way deals CHCH to AUCK. Usually a 10 day deal. Check em out online. Apollo do $1, others do about $5 a day, sometimes free ferry.

Less riding in Auckland area, so if you did a deal like that, would pay to hire a short term vehicle and hit canterbury/ queenstowm/ Hamner Springs then head up allowing 2-3 days rotorua.

No offence to Auckland but South to central north Island will give you more 'Epic'.
