Do we need Sparc funding to get more Velodromes in NZ?

Everything is on hold for the decision where the next covered veldorome will be located in New Zealand.

But what about alternative approaches?

Like scaled back projects or alternative funding driven by local communities?

For example, look what Boulder did, putting an indoor Velodrome in a Warehouse.

There must be low cost options, that would give us more Velodrome around the country, and give more riders the chance to ride the track as many of the submissions for the new covered velodrome will miss out.

I interpreted the proposal as both quantity and quality. If CHC had a great velodrome >> southland looses bigtime. IMO sometimes its best to keep just one such (fantastic) facility in a smaller centre and breath some life into that centre and let other centres do with just OK ones. 2c

The way most facilities become viable is multi-use; these are usually done via local councils and regional sports trusts etc with funding from various sources. Not necessarily SPARC. The issue is operating them (at ~90% of the pie), moreso than building them (~10%) them. So it's a tough one to get councils to fund because they only cater for such a small part of a community.

And Wellington's velodrome is super close to the airport !

Wellington Definitely fits the Criteria. Lets hope the council are keen to get the Centre here.

Wellington council are fare to busy using the velodrome for concerts to have the time to think about build a decent one!

Sure we need a decent amount of top standard facilites strategically placed around the country and Sparc should be investing in them especially when the sport is givng the returns.

But don't we need new riders coming along all the time? We need to start tapping into the full NZ talent pool and from a earlier age from all over the country. People won't get into track cycling unless there are tracks they can ride on.

Speaking from my local perspective, I'm sure riders like Jesse & Simon VV wouldn't have emerged if they didn't have the 400m outdoor Feilding Cycling track to get started on.

yeah, the problem is if you put a velodrome in say palmy, its great for 3 city's? but to far away from wellington and Auckland to train on.
Placement is going to be the real issue.

No. The people that want to ride on the track can get together and fundraise if they want new velodromes built rather than putting your hands out for other people to fund it.
