the 30 dollar one is probably done by old mate at the garage who will find things wrong with your car that are no issue for him to fix for a nominal fee

....although I have found VTNZ can be really picky, like failed WOF for no water in windscreen washer tank whereas my mechanic would have just chucked some in.

+1 on the VTNZ vs small independant garage thing - I'd rather leave the car with the mechanic who will fix any minor issues he finds.

I don't expect him to give it an 'easy warrant', but having to come back another day because a parking light is out is a pain.

Tis true, last WOF VTNZ said the headlight was pointed too low, so wife took car to dealership who adjusted, took back to VTNZ, who said still too low, so back to Dealership who adjusted, then back to VTNZ who still said a wee bit too low, but said would issue the wof as I suspect they could sense wife blood boiling.

I've had a few inconstancies with VTNZ. Last time I went to a mechanic, not only was he cheaper but he also topped up my brake fluid and polished up my headlamps for free. :thumbsup:

some times not too picky, some times they just have no fucking idea,

VTNZ and other independent testing stations are viewed as cruisy numbers for tired old mechanics who can't be bothered working as mechanics anymore and take great pleasure in failing cars, sometimes for things that either
a) aren't warrant items
b) they fail to identify basic parts of cars and mistake parts for other parts

For me the real eye opener was to take my work car (2005 corolla wagon) and to watch how cursory an inspection it was given, V/s the working over that my 1991 FXGT got last time it went to a VTNZ

I've heard of a lot of corruption, not so much in failing people expensively, but letting people pass because of lazy technicians and places offering discount WOFs not giving a shit. Soooo many dodgy stories here among students with shitter cars/Undie 500 cars. Someone also told me about a dude they encountered in Roto selling people WOFs in the pub!

Plus the receptionist at vtnz thordon reception, is just plain nasty.. (was about a year ago, so maybe not there now).. wouldnt speak and served me with her ipod on and just pointed where to take car and sit, with a filthy look on her face.
