Ironman 2011 - Who's Signing Up?

Postby tricks121 on Tue 11/May/10 11:22am

Hi you cyclists and triathlete's out there...

Whos signed up and maxed the credit cards?

I thought I'd try again, no crashing this year so with a bit of luck, I'll have the confidence back on the bike and be able to have a much stronger and faster race.

Truck loads of dam Aussie's in the race though dam it. :sneaky:

I'm thinking long and hard, I must be due a good race again after the last two shockers. I'm taking a dim view of the "everyone panic" marketing going on though.

Yeah man, making everyone jump really quick. Bad as people will pull out and the 1500 they want ... well I don't think they'll get it in the end. No wait list, who do they think they are!!

Yeah, I reckon I'm due a good one. New training format this year so I am hopeful that I'll get much better strength out of it rather than the LOOOOONNNNGGGGG slow miles... can't be bothered with that style no more, takes up too much time. :D

curious, I'm looking at going back to longer miles as I went strength based last year, which gave me decent bike and 1st half run splits, but not the staying power to finish the run strongly, oh for a happy middle ground

Bit of both I'm hoping. I've always been a strong runner so I'll hopefully carry that through.

John Ackland has told all his athlete's to hurry up and enter.

He was talking to Jane P and she said to him they are worried the spots could all go this weekend!!! Apparently we've already got 500 aussies to compete against compared to the 250-300 we normally get ...scary Aussies!!!

There goes my next attempt at Kona ... dam it!

well, it happened, after saving up like mad, I went to enter this morning and its full.

thus ends ones of the last races that the average person can get into. ( not everyone has a lazy 800 kicking around yanno)

how long before the marketers push for the kind of madness the north american racers have to put up with, on-site/on the day sell outs and conditions for entry?

The price that comes with popularization ay? It's good for the sport that it's becoming more popular, means greater options for the athlete but it certainly has its drawbacks. Ironman NZ always struck me as a homegrown event, it's unfortunate that it's come down to a scramble for spots. Are they really not doing a waiting list? That's retarded.

p.s. Tricks121 - you don't happen to frequent Sir Breadwins on Lambton do you?

popularity nothing, imnz sold out because spot were cut from the aussie races, coupled with an "everyone panic" marketing drive.

the trends overseas have always proved that WTC are nothing more than a corporate greed machine ( ironman branded stroller or mattress anyone?) but for JP and co to but into it and shut out a lot of the folks who were the core or the race for so long is a bit of a low blow.

If you're on the email list get ready for the onslaught of news about how clever they [the organizers] are and how "wonderful' the sellout it.

I'm disappointed for sure, but surprised? not in the slightest.

I got in but I'm thinking man, it's gonna be a tough yard to get to the Kona level I wanted especially as they have cut back on the Kona spots as well.

Yep, I frequent it LOTS, assume you've been there in the mornings and arvo's when I've been in?

bit premature though, there's still a couple of thousand movies to make before they get to the 2011th one :paranoid:
