South Island Coast To Coast Without Using Any Roads...ideas

Postby G on Sun 9/May/10 6:44pm

we're thinking about doing a tour from west coast to east coast without using the roads. the idea would be to get permission where needed and head across using as many farms tracks etc as possible to pull together a monster MTB tour with a difference. thinking maybe a 10 day tour???

If anyone has any helpful information it would be appreciated as i'm not sure if this has been done before or not.

Cheers

I know two different people/groups who have done this. They used very different routes. One was North Canty to approx. Greymouth, and the other was was down south through Otago. Any idea which part of the South Island you want to cross?

FLATULENTFRIEND you're major egg.

Thanks for the useful/intelligent reply XCguy.
Was thinking the Canterbury option as we live in Dunedin and have done a far amount of the Dunstan trail and several other mission rides around Central.

ANy idea how to get intouch with the lads that have done the Canty option?

It was a few years ago and I haven't spoken to the guy since. But I will email him if I can find his address still. Will let you know if I have any success. I could describe the rough course to you though probably. Doesn't use much private land.

Didn't Bluedog organize a ride or race that went from Nth Cant beach to the coast via Lake Sumner last year?

I don't think it has happened yet, although a bunch of people did more or less what he is planning, I don't know the whole route but I remember it involved heading up the hurunui and over the pass.

hey G it's Chris/Bandit, I used to guide horsetreks in north canterbury back in the day, you could go via the hurunui river and surrounding stations and cross over the harpers pass. when are you planning to go as it would be alot easier to show you on a map but i'm not back from jamaica till 12 june. some amazing country, mint lakes and natural hot pools await. plenty of doc huts as well as station huts too
