How Many Times Could You Do The Nationals Course Hill

Postby Rik on Wed 13/Jan/10 11:52am

Following this weekends road racing Elite nationals. My boss could not get his head around the field doing 11 laps up Dyres Pass Road. A 1k climb of approximately 250m with gradients at times approaching 20%.

Are these people truely special?

Guess for the purposes of this exercise we could ignore the flat part of the course.

I reckon I could do it the 11+ times, however not at their speed and I may need some breaks in between.

I've done 6 sub 6min laps back to back up hackthorne - but of course elites were probably getting closer to sub-4

No, compared to you, they'll be doing sub 8.

Your 250m elevation and 20% gradient is a bit optimisitic. The Cup is about 130m I think so maybe 120 approx from the bottom. You are right though, those riders are special. Once in a day is fine for me...

the hackthorne/dyers intersection is exactly on the 140m contour line on my maps - takahe is 200m

wonder if they were factoring the two wee lumps around the downs (so 250m per lap)

Comm Games in 1974 did Hackthorne - Cup - Dyers and a shorter loop on flat around the river 17 times.

I could probably manage the 11, but I’d probably need a couple of stops for food and the car may need more petrol too….

I would get bored of doing reps up the hill well before my legs gave in.

So up Dyers, down Hack, and around again?

I'll give it crack tomorrow, time it up Dyers, and let you know where I left my lunch and lungs.

I honestly have no idea how many I could do, But was thinking I needed some hill repeats on todays ride.

20% is way over the top.
The max gradient is a tad over 10%.
I noticed at the weekend that somebody had actualy gone and marked some gradients on the road.

My bike computer does graients (not mega accurately of course) but you have to go up something much steeper than Dyers to get near 20%.

For example:
Governors Bay to Sign of Kiwi has bits up to about 14%
The Bastard is mainly 9-10% with several slightly steeper bits.
Major Aitken Drive up to about 17%
Monks Spur not sure??
Maffeys could be over 20% Anybody know?

Cheers

They were cracking out their climbs in approx 5m give or take 30s. The fastest would have been around the 4m20s mark. No way sub 4m.

I managed 7 repeats back to back, with my slowest 5m25s, and quickest 4m40sec. That was over 18months ago.

I feel a challenge building here... :paranoid:

I was keen to give mfw's 74 laps a crack so not sure what the fuss is with only 11. It is only 11km climbing after all, which is what we all do on a normal hill training loop.

Keen to hear how Millsy gets on.
