Peak To Pub Returns To Mt Hutt

Now in its 11th year, the Peak to Pub in association with Columbia continues to attract record numbers from the NZ outdoor, multisport and skiing community.

“The Peak to Pub is so popular because it’s got that fun factor. It’s a bit whacky and it’s nice and short but still has a massive sense of achievement at finishing it. It’s also ideal for teams,” reckons Steve Gurney, three times winner of the event.

This fun and exhilarating triathlon style event starts high on the slopes of Mt Hutt Ski Area with a mass start run to skis or snowboard, followed by a giant slalom style race down to the base area through gates.

After the ski/snowboard leg, competitors launch into a heart stopping 19km bike ride down the Mt Hutt access road.

Racers then transition to an 11km run to Methven to finish outside the iconic Blue Pub in the centre of Methven, for a well deserved drink!

This year Mt Hutt has let New Zealand sports legend and past Peak to Pub winner Steve Gurney loose on the course design, to revolutionize the race!

“The course will be extra fun and extra competitive,” said Mr Gurney. “There are lots of exciting options included in the race course this year; you’ll need to be cunning!”

“Every year competitors love to tell their stories about the race for weeks afterwards such as the wobbles they got on the ski slalom or the massive speed they got on the mountain bike, but this year there will be yarns for months about the surprise options we’ve included in the new course!” said Gurney.

Multisport guru and Coast to Coast winner Steve Gurney competed in the Peak to Pub until 2006 and continues to have a passion for the race due to its unique combination of sports. He is excited to see it in its 11th year still gaining momentum, and to be a part of this year’s race.

Peak to Pub not only attracts top multi-sporters but also many enthusiastic amateurs seeking fun and personal triumph. This unique event is gaining popularity every year due to the awesome setting as you roll down onto the Canterbury plains and in 2008 attracted over 50 teams and just over 100 individuals.
