Round 1 of the 2017 VFR MTB downhill worldcup is under way and if qualifying is any indication there could be some shuffling of team riders before round 2. Only one third of the teams scored any qualifying points and Kev is alone in picking both the fastest men and women's qualifiers.

With such a topsy turvy event it seems only fitting that the randomly picked squad of the vorb monkey should score the most points for the final but thanks to his solid qualifying performance, it is Kev that heads the leader board. A lot of teams at the bottom of the table would still be on 0 points if it wasn't for the woman on their squad

I do wonder why more riders don't tank their qualifying run if the weather forecast is dubious for the following day. I stayed up to watch and it was a snore fest, the final riders were 20-30 seconds slower. Yet if anyone in the top five maybe squeezed their brakes so they qualified mid pack they would have had a chance of a win and take 200 points.
Instead the top 5 qualifiers finished:
Loris Vergier (50 points qualifying) 72nd for 9 points
Loic Bruni (40), 71st, 10 points
Luca Shaw (30), 75th, 6 points
Danny Hart (25), 76th, 5 points
Aaron Gwin, (22), DSQ, 0 points.

Alexandre Fayolle, (0), 1st, 200 points. After starting 52nd.

I realise TV wouldn't like it, the only downside I can think of is not knowing how fast you need to go, surely the track isn't as beaten up either.
Or the increased the qualifying points. That would reward consistency over two days I suppose.

They get points for qualifying, they don't want to not qualify, they don't want to catch a slower rider on track, they get more media exposure if they're in the top qualifiers, they use the qualifier as a practice full-speed race run, and it's probably equally likely that the conditions will be better at the end rather than worse.

Just a guess.

Maybe the top teams should buy time machines - they could use their 20/20 hindsight to accurately judge the weather and speed they need to ride the qualifiers to get a good result rather than that pesky unreliable foresight.

Also this (from another web forum so dont hate me if its not right). Not quite black and white as blow your qualifier to start your race run earlier.

UCI rules:

4.5.033 The start order for the final is determined on the basis of the reverse result of the qualifying round or seeding run (women juniors), the fastest rider starting last.
The top 10 protected riders (as defined in art. 4.5.031) who were not classified in the top 10 places for women elite and the top 20 places for men elite of the qualifying round must start immediately before the top 10 women elite and the top 10 men elite from the qualifying round. For the men elite, protected riders ranked 11th-20th who were not classified in the top 20 places of the qualifying round will start before the top 20 men elite
from the qualifying round.

I can't think of a race where they had rain and the track improved. The last ten were basically 30 seconds slower, and cost themselves the chance of 200 points. As for the next post, I did read that, if you're a highly ranked rider you'll get sent off between 10-20 or so.
I guess my point is you could potentially have the same situation recur for all seven rounds, dry on Saturday, rain midway through Sunday. Of course this makes interesting, Danny Hart and Sam Hill had spectacular wins. As for appealing to sponsors, I think winning or placing highly on Sunday is much more valuable than being a qualifying god or goddess...
