Velodrome Roof Collapses In Invers!

Veleodrome roof collapses in Invers!

Just read this on stuff, argh!

The roof of a stadium in Invercargill has collapsed after a storm dumped the largest amount of snow seen in the city for decades.

The 2000-seat Stadium Southland, which includes an indoor cycling velodrome and indoor sports arena, has been evacuated and sealed off.

Manager Nigel Skelt said the damage was ''very severe''.

Police have warned Invercargill residents to stay indoors as heavy snow continues to fall in the city and surrounding areas.

Roads are described as treacherous and police have attended numerous accidents.

State Highway 1 near Woodlands, between Invercargill and Edendale, has been closed and it is understood a Fonterra truck which has jack-knifed on the road is among the vehicles that have been caught out in the area.

A short time ago a tree branch snapped under the weight of snow and crushed a parked car.

Witness Chris Duggan said his car was parked right next to the damaged vehicle and he saw it happen. No-one was injured.

Police also confirmed a person was injured following a low-speed, head-on collision on State Highway 99.

More than 10cm of snow had settled in the city by 11am and it is still falling.

The Invercargill airport is closed and Air New Zealand crews have been sent home.

Snow has started to fall again in Lumsden and Queenstown after light falls overnight.

I bet the structural design engineers will be under scrutiny. They obviously did not allow for snow loading :(

ekk. That's not good. I know the structual engineers in question. Will be stressful times.

What with this and the earthquake alot of structural engineers will be double checking their PI insurance...

Double Bugger. We're headed over to NZ next week for the Yunca Tour, and the Octoberfest Track Carnie at the ILT was meant to be part of it...

I hope, for Invercargill's sake, that the damage is not as extensive as they fear and that, if they don't get it fixed in time for the Carnie, they do get back operational before too long.

Like everything in the design world, everything has its limits. Snow, wind, earthquake - nothing is a finite figure that you can "design for".

But yeah, unless it is one hell of a snow dump - something has gone awry at the design stage.

Couple of pics on there... Hard to judge I suppose, it looks like a lot of snow but not like a gigantic amount of snow.

Is it the roof over the veldedrome or the roof over the stadium part that has collapsed??

Judging by the pics it looks like 10-15cm.
But no one is clearing it and it is turning to slush, If you don't clear this then when the weather clears and you get a frost the slush freezes you will be stuffed.
Use a broom or brush. A shovel for the deep stuff
