Uci Mtb World Cup, La Bresse Preview

Postby Melissa_Theuriau on Fri 8/May/09 10:45am

France returns after a five year absence to host the second Downhill round of the 2009 Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup this weekend, with the city of La Bresse the host.

New Zealand athletes provide a strong presence at this event with several professional athletes on spectacular form.

2006 Junior World Champion Cam Cole (Maxxis) is coming off a breakthrough 6th place at the first World Cup in Pietermariztburg, RSA. Justin Leov (Trek) currently holds a World ranking of 5th and will be looking to continue his regular top ten form, being a genuine podium contender at La Bresse.

Wyn Masters (Ancillotti) also carries good form into this event, having placed 2nd at the Townhill urban downhill event in Bergamo, Italy last weekend. Master's Ancillotti teammate Brook MacDonald is competing in his first World Cup this year and is also coming off a great result, a 2nd overall at Pielle in France against world class elite level competition. MacDonald will be one of the form juniors at La Bresse and joins another blazing Hawkes Bay junior, Aari Barrett (Scott) who currently leads the Junior World Downhill Cup standings after finishing as first junior in South Africa.

Seasoned campaigner Nathan Rankin (Playbiker) is back in Europe this year at his first World Cup of the season, and together with Kieran Bennett (X-Fusion) completes the World Cup professional team kiwi roster at this event.

Two NZ privateers are also competing this weekend. 2007 Junior World Championship bronze medalist Matt Scoles is back on the World Cup circuit after an injury related absence in 2008, and Tauranga's Hayden Lee makes his World Cup debut.

Live coverage from La Bresse can be seen courtesy of www.freecaster.tv or www.mtbcut.tv just after midnight on Sunday May 10th

I take it our only world cup winner Sam Blenkinsop qualifying fastest kiwi is a figment of my imagination as he doesn't exist according to that press release :D

Apologies to Sam and Yeti/Fox - we fell victim to slow updating of the UCI start list when producing that press release. Sam wasn't on there when we wrote the preview (and after la Bresse entries had closed), but he's certainly on there now! Looks sloppy however, and another lesson learnt.
