You really do have a problem with the Police don't you?

Some of us are cyclists, too.

RIP and condolences to both families.

There will perhaps now be some action by Police in that one of thier own has been tragically taken. Why does it take a death (or more) to get things done in this country.

one must ask why the govt demands we save fuel/the planet/obesity etc, why they don't do more (fund) to promote the saftey of those that are out there.

hell, if the head of Roadwatch ain't safe then who is.

the words from Hill St Blues are never more poignent than now.

take care out there.

I don't like wetas either. Get over it. But frankly cops that give reactions like that lower EVERYONES opinions of them.

This is shocking. I've sent letters just now, hopefully LTNZ will have an overflowing inbox tomorrow. I have a friend of a friend connection with one of the fair go reporters. Will give him a call and suggest a story.

I totally agree. That officer should have done more. At very least a warning to the driver. But that was one officer. Not the whole "filth".

Slackboy doesn't speak for me when he rants about the police, Shoreboy. Don't take it personally, would be my advice...

Oh, don't worry I don't! :) It just irks me a little from time to time. But this isn't the place to discuss it.

I've noticed more and more near misses riding to/from work of late. I totally support anything that makes it safer for cyclists to ride anywhere. I think we (cyclists) are a largely ignored group, and it frustrates the hell out of me. AS horrible as it sounds, at the very least today's incidents will hopefully have put cycle safety in the limelight.

I'm a mate of a couple of cops, and fine people they are - one's a roadie as well.

But... Plod doesn't do itself any favours re cyclists in my experience. Was run off the road a year ago by a cop van at the top of the Ngaio gorge, argued with the cop at the bottom and got a shrug from him (he didn't know the road code...), made a complaint and got stuff all contrition or anything satisfactory - just defence and indifference (had to call and follow up 5 times before I got a response).

Separately, was in the Victoria St cop shop to hand in a purse I'd found on the road when a driver followed me in to report me for going (safely) through a red (!!!!). The cop at the counter was only interested in trying to get me to admit an offence so she could give me a lecture.

IMHO, no press or other campaigns are necessary. All govt (national and local) has to do is make a simple decision to enforce the current rules. Drivers will soon work it out. Fine every driver that comes within 1.5m of a bike, every car that stops on the bike lane in Kaiwharawhara, every car that tailgates, etc. Pick the main arterials and blitz them.
