Wouldn't have stood much chance against a 4WD either.

LATEST: A 61 year-old male cyclist died this morning in Upper Hutt after hitting the door of a parked ute as it swung open and being knocked under an oncoming truck.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCarthy said the Upper Hutt resident was cycling south on Ferguson Dr, Silverstream, near St Patrick's College about 8.40am when he was knocked into the path of the truck coming the same way.

Witnesses tried to revive the victim till the ambulance arrived.

Police are contacting the man's family and have spoken to witnesses at the scene. They will examine the ute and truck before considering what, if any, charges will be laid.

Condolences to the guys family.

Yeah i second that.. It sounds like the truck driver had nothing to do with the accident as such, was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. thats gotta be pretty hard to live with though.

So yea, thoughts go out to family and friends of the cyclist and to the truck driver.

Eeesshhhh makes you feel sick right to your very core. Today there is now another circle of people who knew this guy and who have their hearts ripped out. Man I feel for them.

I cant count the number of times drives have opened their doors on me.

When riding with the kids Im teaching them to look into cars to see if there is a driver and to go wide.

Actually feel for the guy who opened the door (as well as the truck driver). Sure he shouldnt have opened the door and will now regret that lapse in judgement for the rest of their life.

Cant help but feel that as petrol begins to pinch more and more and people get onto bikes, the general populace arent consciously primed for the increase in cyclists on the roads.

Totally suck, condolences to all the folks involved. That truck driver must be absolutely wrenched about this, what can you do????
Same thing almost happened to me last night (door swung open in front while commuting, only just swerved around it with nothing to spare)afterwards it did cross my mind that following traffic was a very real threat if this happens.
Not good :(

For Fucks sake, out of control.. I really hope this person makes it
I sent an email to the LTSA today asking them to come up with a TV Ad campaign Targeting safety of cyclists.

Everyone else should do the same. info@landtransport.govt.nz
