Point taken, gavfaemonty. That is totally not on, and it certainly doesn't do us favours. In fact, I'm quite embarrassed by that.

I guess I focus on it more than some colleagues because I'm a cyclist too.

You really do have a problem with the Police don't you?

Some of us are cyclists, too.
I don't like wetas either. Get over it. But frankly cops that give reactions like that lower EVERYONES opinions of them.
I wish I could fully agree with you slacky but unfortunatly there is "the boy that cried wolf syndrome" ..the cops have deal with so many fuckwits, dramitist & the like, that sometimes when there is a real problem they might not realise it  ....... sad but true :(

I would like to think that adverts aimed at making people aware of cyclist would help, but people need to learn in general how to drive better and just cos you have your indicator on it doesn't give right to change that you actually have chech the lane is clear first .Shit I was driving home tonight and had some come out of a on ramp with out looking and forced me into the right hand lane running a police car off the road....yes the cop pulled him over.......unfortunalty whether it's car or cyclist people just don't care, they drive in there own little world and fuck anyone else

I work as a co-responder with cops here in aucks, one of them is a cyclist and told me a funny story - he was riding, got cut off by a driver into a parking lot. Followed her in, stood about 5m away from her as she got out of her vehicle and told her she should look out for cyclists. She told him to piss off, and that when he could ride at 50km/h and be the size of a car, she would give him right of way. He politly excused himself, wrote down the numberplate.

Next day knocks on her door in full uniform, she doesn't recognise him! He tells her there has been a complaint made about her driving. She comes out as the 'vicitm' and claims the cyclist chased her, hit her car, rode up to her and threatened her in the parking lot, and that he was probably psycopathic.

At this point, officer removes hat, and with says "well, thats different to how I remember it, but ok" - woman suddenly realises what shes done, officer tells her off for lyeing and providing misinformation, as well as cutting him off...but doesn't give her a ticket.

Would have loved to see the womans face as she realised who he was.

You're right Shoreboy - not all cops are knobs and shouldn't be put into the one catagory. Any organisation has its bad eggs - I've had a bad experience with one bike shop - doesn't mean I bad mouth all bike shops now.

Most truckies love their job. They take great pains to be as courteous a driver as possible since the last thing they want to happen is to be involved in an accident or hurt somebody. But trucks are not cars and can not be controlled the same way (breaking, turning, de-acceleration, blind spots etc) so other road users have to be aware of this as well.

BUT like any road user category there are bad drivers in the industry. If you have a close call, get cut off, blown off the bike because it was too close etc then the best thing you can do is to call the company the driver works for or is contracted to. Try to talk to the area manager or a person as high up in the chain of command as you can get, telling the receptionist won't get you very far. Don't confront the driver as this will probably just lead to a yelling match, and I doubt the police will do anything unless there was some damage to your bike or person as it will be just your word against the drivers.

If you complain to the company they will listen. You may not hear back from them but the driver will be hauled over the coals and if too many complaints are laid against the same driver then his job / contract is on the line. In fact it will be more then his job since despite the number of trucks on the road the freight business is a "small community" and nobody will want to employ somebody with a reputation of a dangerous driver.

If the phone number is not on the back then the name of the company will be on the drivers door. If you can only see the advertisement on the curtains then phone that business and ask who their freight company is.

Hey guys, Im just a newbie here, and have just read all this, and feel for a starter, the name of the thread needs to be changed, yes the Cyclists were Hit by trucks, but its wasnt the Trucks fault in one of these incidents. I am both cyclist and a truck driver, here in Chch, And driving at peak commuting times, I see alot of poorly lit Bikes, both before during and after sunrise, people need lights on the front of their bikes too, so people dont pull out infront of them at intersections. other than that thats the only thing i have against some people cummuting on bikes, 99% are fine. back to the trucks thing, Shilo is bang on, MOST not all, but most truckies take great pride in their trucks, jobs and driving habbits. but your always going to get rat bags, as with anything, and if you have any incidents with truckies, note the company name, fleet number, or rego number, either will do, location and time if possible, as some trucks have more than one driver, and get into contact with the manager, or somebody high up the food chain, and complain, get the driver in the shit for it, and also any complements aswell do the same thing... hes also right, about blind spots especially on trucks, they have a massive blind spot, beside them, so if your going to pass a truck, try get it done quickly and watch his indicators, as no matter how hard the drivers looks, if your in the wrong spot he just may not be able to see you at all. right thats my rant for the night, cheers for your time, and my condolences to All involved :(

Good on you Murray. But both cyclists were hit by trucks, so the thread title is accurate. No blame has been apportioned by it.

Sorry, I shouldnt have put that in, Im 100% biased on that, it just creates a Negative attitude towards trucks and the trucking industry, which already doesnt have a great public reputation

jesus fucking christ, this is awful, and kind of scary.

Perhaps some people with clout will finally realise that cycling is a worthy and increasingly popular method of commuting, and start sorting out some decent bike lanes, signage etc....

My rant, flicked to a pile of people:

Hi, I am writing this letter in response to the two deaths of cyclists today. I feel that although cyclists have been complaining for years, perhaps through these two horrible accidents a 'knee-jerk' reaction (that we as a country seem so good at) just might get some attention.

As an avid mountain-biker, and semi-frequent cycle commuter, I feel I have enough experience both in bike handling, and dealing with traffic to confirm my opinions. Many times I have been pushed off the road by cars, trucks, and busses. Far too many drivers in this country don't even consider cyclists, I have had cases where a driver will look me in the eye, and proceed through an intersection where I have right of way - forcing me to make evasive manouvers. I have had experiences where I have had to jump up kerbs (where the mountain biking skills come in) because a bus decided he couldn't wait for me to get past his stop before pulling in. Many drivers don't seem to realise a rider with no protection stands no chance against their vehicle, and what worries me most is the lack of law enforcement preventing the 'bigger is better' approach of driving.

Everyone seems to be trying to promote cycling as a viable means of transport at the moment. For the average punter with less than average bike handling skills, I believe this is close enough to suicide. If I didn't have the skills that mountain biking has taught me and had jumped straight into cycle commuting, I would be extremely suprised to still be alive today.

I hope you can pick up on this issue, and I am sure I won't be the only one writing to you with regards to todays tragic events. Someone needs to give cyclists a voice, because drivers sure can't hear us as the barrel past in their death machines.

I would love to hear your response to this issue.

I must say, I've cycled in a few places around the world, and biking is my only form of transport, and I really don't think kiwi drivers are any worse than elsewhere. Of course there's potential for them to be better than elsewhere, and that would be a good thing.

There really should be a cycle lane up SH2, and a decent one, that has right of way over the off ramps. There's a reason that people don't use the existing one - it's crap, bumpy and full of glass - no need. And it peters out to nothing, with no warning, leaving you to cross the frigging motorway WTF??

If I could get an uninterrupted cycleway from Tawa into the city, I'd commute by bike rather than take the train.
