Turoa Changes For High Noon Express Chair

For Winter 2011, Turoa customers can expect a significantly improved High Noon Express Chairlift. Following two tower collapses during 2010 and numerous derailing and damage incidents during severe ice storms, lift manufacturer Doppelmayr has recommended some significant structural changes to the lift. This work will all be completed prior to this next winter.

These structural changes to the line of the lift will involve, relocation of 2 towers, installation of 4 additional towers, installation of new combination sheave assemblies and many of the existing towers will be shortened. Reducing the length of the spans between towers and decreasing tower heights will significantly reduce the number of times that high winds cause the cable to derail during storm cycles. This will allow the cable to be moved more frequently during storm cycles resulting in reduction of ice buildup both on towers and the cable. The lift will then be far less susceptible to damage and will be far easier to have deiced and operational following a severe storm cycle.

Both Doppelmayr and Mt Ruapehu lift experts believe this will be a very good solution to the considerable problems that have been occurring as a result of significant storms since the lift was installed in 2007.

The High Flyer in 2011 (the not so good news)

Currently, the High Noon Express Chairlift passes overtop of the return station of the High Flyer chairlift. The structural changes being implemented on the High Noon Express, and in particular the shortening of the towers, will result in this lift not being able to pass over the top of the High Flyer return station. Therefore an outcome of these High Noon Express changes is the bull wheel (return station) of the High Flyer chairlift will need to be removed.

The High Flyer will not be able to operate during the 2011 winter.

The Jumbo T-bar will operate earlier in the season and be open on more days to address any lift queue pressure.

The High Flyer in 2012 (the very good news)

We have an expectation for Winter 2012 to gain consent and install the High Flyer chairlift in a new location downhill from its present site. This new location takes the lift right out into the 1000 Day Area (south east) accessing a huge variety of terrain that is currently difficult to get back from. This repositioning would also provide great access back to the base of the High Noon Express from the Triangle, and Glacier areas.

Should the High Flyer consent process be delayed, we would shorten the High Flyer chairlift for the Winter 2012 season.
