How about a downhill track running exactly parallel where possible running alongside. and very clear signage at each entry point as to direction. Being downhill it won't need to have the same smooth flow as an uphill and can have drop-offs.
Plus add some clear signs for walkers walking up that it is one-way and they are likely to be bowled?
Maybe, for beginners/less confident, Transient remains two way, but with clear speed restrictions.

That would be really hard to enforce.
As sifter said, there is a definite busy time (down in morning, up at night)
It reminds me of the giant escalator in HK that swaps direction for cummuters.

Some tracks in Mt Vic end with a drop, that could one way to discorage people going up. But... then that might put some potential downhill users off.

Here's an idea. JUST DON'T FUC*KING RIDE DOWN THERE IF YOU CAN'T HELP BUT RIDE FAST.

On the subject of other tracks being available.... If you want a quality downhill option to avoid a possible head-on collision....

HELP DIG.

That simple.

Woah! I go away for 4 days and this thing goes ballistic :p !

SimonK a couple of pages back, I have indeed had an unusually high number of crashes on transient, and the odd one has for sure been my fault, however more crashes have happened to me while I have been riding uphill and been crashed into (like I said, I was hit twice while riding uphill last week and no harsh words were exchanged on my part) so while they still may well have been my fault I believe that a certain degree of bad luck is involved (it seems to follow me around like a bad smell :p).

I figure that crashing into people/being crashed into is something that is liable to happen despite our best intentions, and when it does happen all you need to do is be polite and try not rip anyone's head off.

and to 1scotty1, I have never denied my part in the crash...

No Bryn, but instead you try to apportion blame to other parties - you hit a stationary object (in this case a person), and might as well be trying to blame a tree for being in your way.

I (like many Wellingtonians) have been using Transient almost since the day it opened, in both directions, most weeks around four to six times. I've never been involved in a collision with another trail user - mountain biker, walker or runner. I often find myself pulling over to let others through, regardless of my direction of travel.

As for crashing into other people being inevitable, I've never been involved in a collision with another cyclist (but plenty of trees...) in the five or six years I've been riding. Then again, I guess I don't ride all that much...

I guess because some people don't have crashes with other cyclists, no one does.

Like helmets: I've appreciated being made to wear one occasionally. Therefore everyone should have to wear one.

Arguments from anecdotes.

:p

I think anecdotes which involve folk who ride this particular track a hell of a lot and never crash into other track users are relevant. They lend support to the theory that the crashes are avoidable if the riders involved use decent strategies when riding this track, i.e. not riding so fucking quick that they crash into someone on every ride...
