Trail Developments At Rainbow Mountain - Rotorua

Postby bumpsterrob on Thu 29/Mar/12 11:37am

As a part of the Rotorua’s national cycle trail Te Ara Ahi, DOC in Rotorua are developing a mountain biking trail in association with local iwi Ngati Tahu Ngati Whaoa.

The new trail utilises Te Ara Ahi and the Rainbow Mountain summit walking track to create a fantastic mountain biking loop. The grade four decent through the geothermal environment will be technical & challenging.

It is expected that construction should be complete in the next couple of months to make the new loop rideable, so stay tunned to this thread.

Check out the flyer on the development:

Howdy Rob,

I will be heading up to Rotorua this weekend and would like to check Rainbow Mountain out. Is the new track open to the public? I was thinking of parking at Kerosene Creek and doing a loop from there. Finishing with a soak in the creek.

MTB bike loop is now offically open.
You can easily park at either Kerosene Creek or the car park on SH 5.
The first section (300m-400m) of the cycle trail - Te Ara Ahi - heading from Kerosene Creek to the North West still needs some work but is ridable. But the rest of loop to the summit is complete.
The only other piece of trail to be completed is the cycle trail from SH 5 car park at the base of Rainbow Mtn to Okaro Road.
It won't be a great ride in wet conditions so maybe worth giving it a miss if the forecast isn't great (I haven't checked what is happening with the weather. The trail is still soft and needs to bed in.
Cheers.

If you're in Rotorua and haven't headed out to Rainbow Mountain yet here is your chance.

There is a ride out there this weekend with Southstar Shuttles on Sunday 20th May.

Hey all. I'm planning on riding this on Sunday. Is it best to park at SH5 or at Te Ranga? I was thinking about a dip in Kerosene Creek afterwards but have a read a few dodgy stories on teh interwebs. Is it all good? :paranoid:

I was there on Saturday, and most people parked at kerosene creek (the end of Te-Ranga), I'd rather park on SH5 (but I'm quite paranoid about such things)

Kerosene creek seems OK, take your bike down with you (ie don't leave it on the back of the car) don't be silly with your valuables and you should be fine

I would allow time to do 2 laps, as its better the second time down, although if the weather forecast is right (rain) it would be a pretty "interesting" ride in the wet

Thanks for the info PBR. I'm trying to ignore the weather forecast for now.. Might have to come up with a plan b if it really hoses down.

Good point about doing two laps though. How long does one lap take?
