Top Performance From Cheatley In Road Cycling World Cup

Postby Melissa_Theuriau on Mon 1/Jun/09 8:50am

Beijing Olympian Catherine Cheatley showed she is back to her best in finishing sixth in a bunch sprint at the UCI World Cup in Montreal today.

Cheatley (Wanganui) showed she has fully recovered from a serious injury on the track this summer to claim the best finish by a New Zealander in a World Cup since Sarah Ulmer won in Wellington three years ago.

Racing for her US-based pro team, Colavita Sutter Homes, Cheatley had a strong performance over the hilly 110km course. Only 33 riders finished from the 112 starters with 25 finishing outside of the time limit, such was the gruelling pace set by the breakaway group of six riders that included Cheatley who rode aggressively over the hills.

Great Britain’s Emma Pooley (Cervelo Test Team) held off the chase group to claim victory from Emma Johansson (Sweden) and Trixi Worrack (Equipe) with Cheatley close behind in the bunch sprint.

Of the other New Zealanders in the race, fellow Olympian Joanne Kiesanowski (Team TIBCO) was 14th 1m 14sec behind while Te Awamutu’s Emma Petersen (Team Ultralink) finished outside of the time limit.

Pooley attacked just 400 metres into the race's opening lap and remained clear throughout.

The UCI Women's World Cup now head to Sweden where riders will contest the Open de Suède Vargarda Team Time Trial on July 31.

Results, WUCI World Cup, Montreal, 110km:
Emma Pooley (GBR) Cervélo TestTeam 3:09.09, 1;
Emma Johansson (Swe) Swedish National Team at 1:14, 2;
Trixi Worrack (Ger) Equipe Nuernberger Versicherung, same time, 3;
Ruth Corsett (Aus) Australian National Team, same time, 4;
Regina Bruins (Ned) Cervélo TestTeam, same time, 5;
Catherine Cheatley (NZl) Colavita Sutter Homes, same time, 6.
Other New Zealanders:
Joanne Kiesanowski (NZl) Team TIBCO at 4:58, 14;
Emma Petersen (NZl) Team Ultralink, outside time limit.

That's a great result for Cath. I was soeaking with some of the other riders who raced, and they all mentioned how well she's climbing / how much smaller she is that last season.

Good stuff, Cath! But great to see my Jazz Apples teammate Ruth Corset (only one T!) up there in 4th place too...great stuff on one of the truly testing World Cup circuits. :thumbsup:

Yep - the Aussie team worked hard - they had Ruth away for nearly two laps, with about a 45s gap. Nearly worked, but she did well to get back up for 4th after being caught.
