Tis The Season To Open The Bbq And Find...

Postby Malcy on Sun 13/Dec/15 3:08pm

Rusty plates.

Ok Vorbii... The plates on my semi expensive BBQ have lost their finish and are now a bit rusty. The flat plate is the worst, the grill plate has about fifty percent usable (non-rusty) surface.

What do ya reckon is the best solution? Haven't used the bigger in a while, last year's BBQ season wasn't quite good enough, so it's not been used much in a couple of years.

Traditional BBQ cleaner is beer, but I don't know how well it works on rust. Maybe ask in the mechanics thread? Someone will have used it to prep their steel frame.

Get it hot as fuck and burn off as much of the crap/coating as you can (put it over an open fire if possible or in a self cleaning oven during a burn cycle), then stainless steel wool and/or sandpaper, then retreating with flaxseed oil.

Takes a while but is a good alternative to buying new stuff. There's plenty of shit guides on how to do it incorrectly, but this person seems to have got it about right (guide is for a cast iron pan):

My 2c - attack plates with grinder+wire wheel, wail on a boatload of oil, set the smoke signals going

Alternative - give the family a tetanus shot, rust adds flavour

I got told to use half an onion to wipe over the plates once it had the scrape and hot oil, it worked surprisingly well, the plates came up mint.

Agree with the first part.

I made tea in a rusty teapot (not a euphemism) resulting in my partner spewing all evening and reminding me of it for years.

Why do people stop using their bbq?
Nothing beats a winter barbi if you are out of the rain

Spit roasts next to a bonfire. Just coals under the beast, no flames.
