By the way, I think this thread title is disgraceful.

I put the title because that was the line that National Radio used.

The interview is at 8;30AM.

Changed time now 8:35, you can sleep in.

Does anyone know if Tino has a daughter ? (Really, not a dodgy question) The Tabak's used to live a couple of houses down from us when we were younger and I only remember the daughters name. Just trying to work out if it is the same family.

Yes, think there was a Melanie Tabak who raced here (quite well) for a few years. But if it was Tino's daughter it is another question. Bit like Clan Kiesanowski in Canterbury or Clan Sheath in Auckland.

Tino coached 1993 World Road Champion Monica Valvick and had a rather excellent form of motopacing. He sat behind her in the car and if she slowed from goal pace he beeped on the horn :p

=} Its was certainly an interesting interview this morning and good to get a snapshot of how like really was for a pro rider in Europe in the 70s. It was a time when bike racing was still a job for mainly blue collar boys.

can't wait to read (and reread) it Tino. I expect to be very impressed: by your career, the way it's described, and your honesty about difficult subjects. I missed the radio interview, but hope I can go find it online now!

Cheers :)

Cheers, saved the file for a listen. I heard the end of the interview this morning - a bit of an insight into how tough it was at the top of the sport in the 70s. It was interesting how shocked Kim Hill seemed to be about riders negotiating on the road who would win the sprint - people with an interest in cycling know that that kind of thing is part of the sport, but I suppose it does seem a bit odd to people from the outside. It certainly doesn't go on as openly in other sports, but other sports don't have the combination of competition and cooperation that cycling has.

I thoroughly enjoyed Tino speaking at the book launch last night. :) Unfortunately I had to rush off so I couldnt meet him in person. Jonathan Kennett has done a fabulous job with the book (I'm a fast reader ) and its well worth the read.
