Nah, I'm not into white convertible escorts :D

The only reason we moved back to NZ was had a daughter. I want her to be as frigid as the rest of the kiwi girls :satan:

Send her to avonside girls high here in CHCH, I hear they have a really strict no-boys-allowed reputation. :p

I met a couple of people who dispute that intelligence exists. One going into teachers college, one coming out.

I studied intelligence testing a bit many yonks ago, here are a few tidbits:

An IQ test is VERY cheatable but only by getting access to that specific test.
If someone decides to "get really good at IQ tests" by practising on other tests they can raise their score a bit, but not a lot beyond their natural level on a test they had not seen before. IQ tests can give a score too low but they have limited scope for false positives.

IQ tests may score for for many abilities (factors) which are to at least some extent separate. A combined score is often generated from the sub-scores.
There is dispute about the extent and even existence of a general intelligence factor, called g.

These factors are not predefined, they emerge during validation of the questions.

Creating and validating a test takes a lot of work. You start by thinking up all sorts of questions which you think might have something to do with whatever you imagine intelligence might be. After testing a heap of people you do cross-correlations to find out which questions appear to be measuring something, and which of those seem to be measuring the same things. A few cycles of picking and refining questions will be needed. Also you try to weed out questions which strongly measure stuff like race, class, sex, age, nationality etc, though these can not be fully eliminated.

What each factor is may be sort of obvious (e.g. verbal, spatial or numerical ability) or it may be quite obscure. You can try correlating test performance against other measures of performance to try to find out what you are measuring, but the results are much less clear as you might expect because each individual develops their own way to use their own mixture of abilities to get a job done.

Rocket scientists and judges always have a very high IQ, but successful real-estate agents and truck drivers would cover a much wider range. For a great many jobs the minimum IQ for good performance is quite low, as is the level above which IQ is not relevant to results.

So for many purposes IQ testing is not useful. I wouldn't put it in with El Ringhole's madness though, because IQ is real and measurable.
Retesting over a lifetime normally gives a score within 4 points of the original, with a predictable variation with age and mental lifestyle (use it or lose it). OTOH I'm not aware of any evidence that Mr Ringoolie has ever predicted anything.

As for exactly what IQ is, the most true answer is the least satisfying: Intelligence is what an IQ test measures.

Thanks ST. That’s interesting.

Before we were wed my wife got a book (or two) of IQ tests, did them and predictably her IQ went up.

When I was doing my teaching training we studied a guy called Howard Gardner who’d created “Multiple intelligence” – 8 areas in life (he’s now got it up to 13 areas) that people can excel in. Some schools (like Gladstone Primary in Pt Chev) are MI schools and use it in teaching and assessment.

I thought it was a very helpful and person affirming system
