My SS I whipped up in the weekend. New to the SS game so will find out how the 32/16 drive rides this weekend

Hey NorthPiha the tensioner you have looks very similar to the one I have bought - be keen to know what you think, when and where are you riding this weekend ?

Yeah it is a Raleigh SS kit. It was a good deal. Something like $45 for the tensioer, the gear spacers and locking ring.
We will proably be hitting Whitford friday for track building and a bit of a sift and Woodhill Saturday :)

The catalogue pic of my wee ss - essentially stock standard, running 32:16, which gets me most places, even in Welly.

It brings me much joy

the Stiffee gets simplified - and somewhat surprisingly stays that way.

Running 32:20 - but with big tyres that up the effective gearing somewhat - since that pic the chain has been shortened as much as possible.

Hmmmmmm, I'll try to get a pic up later today, as my SSis my current commuter bike and is with me.

I run 33:16 off road, and find it good, even managed all of Makara on it, so its nice and simple/easy.

I have 2 rear cogs, and the surley singleator gives enough tension for running either, with the chainline centred on the two. i have a higher gear for commuting, 33:14.

Hey JB, you can ride up rapaki on that gearing? I'm impressed!

I've ridden up stuff as steep as rapaki on it, just nowhere near as long

So we'll have to see on that one ;)

Just put my new baby together last week, and my first ride on her along the CHCH port hills traverse tracks was the single most enjoyable experience I've ever had on a bicycle.
Sure I may have been hurting up Rapaki  , but a light single speed with kick ass geometry (ie. Ventana) seems too flow like syrup of the rocky tracks. Currently running 32 17, but will gear up for botle snake races, the beauty of the ecentrc bottom bracket is that my chain will never skip no matter what insane gear I choose. Haven't weighted her in, but expect it to be around 20 pounds of single speeding goodness! :)

The Monster and the Inbred. That should be the title of a new disney animated film :hmmm:

Running 32:18 for my spindly twiddly legs (and I like spinning and actually riding up hills), using a Raleigh tensioner thingy. Soon to be converted to EBB and givenb a spanking paintjob by Jeff at kiwibikes.

But first - a 2 week tour of Otago - singlespeed. We'll see how that goes.

I'll stick a picture of the fixed Pompino up soon. And a better one of the Inbred.

Are those spd compatible sandals HM? ;)

How do you guys find those low ratios tho'? i used to spin 32:16 out too quickly and get left behind and that was on my fat old bike :(

Cruising along, I've often thought about those SPD sandals Shomano used to make...
Those ones in the picture tend to flex a bit under power though :)

I'm still playing with ratios. My cross/roadie used to run 42:16 as a SS, but now it is a fix at 44:16 - which I find fine. But for some reason I can't get on with a 32:16 MTB. In fact I started with a 32:15 whicch almost killed me, then tried a 32:16 and settled on a 32:18. The 32:18 lets me run for longer around K-Loop and Makara and all that - and with the 70-100km days in Otago coming up and the 12hr Moonride solo singlespeed I'm erring on the twiddly side - lets me ride for longer. I guess I'm just used to spinning. The fix bike is great for developing leg speed and a smooth pedalling action!

But there is a 16 tooth rear in my toolbox, and the Inbred may change soon to a 32:16 or maybe a 34:18. My legs are getting more SS strong, and I am finding I'm pedalling the hills easier now. We'll see.
