So can anyone offer suggestions on what sorta gear to ride at Wellington velodrome for a bit of a track noob?

Also what does one do to prepare a selection of gears? Someone has told me to get one sprocket and a bunch of rings which seems like an expensive way to do it

Depending on your event etc, you could start with 51x15 (or 46x14 or something). Reason I'd use that to start with is I ran 46x16 on my fashion bike and found it fine for street riding and the odd Akas loop, so gear up for proper tark riding.

If you get a 47 tooth chainring and a 14, 15 and 16 tooth sprockets that gives you a good spread of gears from warm up through to a 91 inch gear which will do you fine for racing in Welly. Most track bikes come with a 48, pain in the arse, but you'll always find a use for those 3 sprockets.

My Look, prior to daughter cannibalising it for wheels, handlebars, and handlebar stem... it now looks very sad hanging in the back of the workshop.

That really is beautiful.

I'm far too fat and slow for track but this is the bike Hannah rode at Junior Nationals last year - and Jon is riding at Nationals this year. Hannah reckons it's the perfect bike to take to nationals . . . . you can leave it lying around and nobody will steal it because it will be the crappiest looking bike there! :D

Mostly period parts, and some not period bits that are due to be replaced.

I'd like to get it repainted properly at some stage with new decals, but it'll do for now!

appears I own more track bikes than any other flavour :o Mind you one is a converted road avanti (and the one that I liked better to race on track) The other is a steel Bauer ( I think) and was also told it was built for Graham Miller.

Very nice indeed John. Are they L/F record hubs I see on the bauer?
