Re: The Redistribution Of Wealth Poll

My point is that $26000 wouldn't buy you anything if it had zero value, nor would any other random figure. And that everyone would kill each other because of it. The geographer Jarad Diamond has written that homicide was a leading cause of death in societies prior to the development of, or contact with, civilisations utilising intensive agriculture (and the associated epidemic diseases). It was a very practical method of managing conflicts of opinion, population density and associated resource use. It is default behaviour in human beings where organisational complexity is absent from society - ie anarchy. And he should know, he's an expert.

Of course if magic was involved we could dream up any scenario you want. In which case I suspect everyone will use their new found wealth to establish a cooperative organic farming community on Venus.

And your point is? :eh:

OK - here's some visual AIDS aids for people like Mr Hyde who're lack imagination right now. As we've previously read if you evenly divided up the world's "wealth" amongst the global population everyone would end up with around $26,000 (yes I know this is totally arbitrary and from 2000 but it's the best number I have.)

$26,000 would get you this house in Kadoka, South Dakota: http://www.sellwithsusan.com/details_re ... ?mls=90879 - map here: http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=q&sourc ... iwloc=addr

While $260,000 would get you this lovely place in a gated community in San Jose, Costa Rica: http://www.therealestate.net/HTML/1909.html

So if we put everyone in the whole world in a shitty house in South Dakota how long would it take before 1 out of 10 of them were living in a mansion in Costa Rica and the other 9 were living in a refrigerator cartons?

if everyone can only afford the 26K house, and these are limited in availability and assuming 10 % deposit to secure the property. land grab as much as you can, then flick them quickly in the ensuing property boom due to lack of houses, then set up a bank to loan money to those who now can't afford what was the 26K house. then sell those loans on and clip the ticket. win win

Questions, If a Sudanese chap, sitting in his cow-poo dwelling, suddenly found 26 grand in his lap, what would he do with it? What would he spend it on? Who would receive his money, assuming it was received lawfully? Would he buy a house in South Dakota and move there? If so, would he be able to function there? Would there be a demand for poo-sculpting expertise or hunter/gatherer? Could he build a house in his current location, for 26k, and would he even want to?

I would assume that he would get the 26k, scratch his head a few times, then burn it to cook his goat's intestines. He'd be happy.

if $26k landed in my lap, I'd be off to the casino to drink booze and play blackjack and redistribute the wealth :)

Probably not a bad idea at all.

Not really, assuming that I still had everything I had prior to the $26k landing in my lap.

well no you wouldn't, as all wealth has been redistributed! including what you have.

hmmm setting up a casino is looking like the smartest thing to do.

Buy $26,000 worth of guns, bullets, grenades, whatever else weapons you can get. Then go steal other peoples $26,000 and use it to buy more guns and build a private army of poorer people.

The poor have their own stupidity to blame for thier poverty. Redistributing wealth like this will just make KFC and cigarette companies richer. Sterilizing the poor would be more effective, they breed like rats.

Indeed. Actually, maybe setting up a tax department would be the way to go, then tax everyone 20% + GST, + expenses on the $26k that just landed in their lap.

Impossible to enforce rules without weapons. Need weapons first. Then prove you mean business by killing some folks. Then invent rules to get you even more money.

The poor make the rich richer, not the rich making the poor poorer? Bugger me, who would have thought.....

Re: The Redistribution Of Wealth Poll

Interesting scenario Tama.

I'm gonna go with 50 years (seeing as there isn't a 200 year option). This is based on the principle that you need money to make money (either as an individual or a society). If you (and all the people around you) don't start with much, it's going to take heaps longer to get filthy rich.

I'm also assuming anarchy will not ensue (that's the optimist in me). There's still a police force and armies right? Maybe the US won't be able to afford to be the world's police force any more. That's gonna make things in Israel and Taiwan interesting.

It took a couple of centuries for wealth in the US to be so inequitably distributed (and that's despite some settlers starting with old world wealth (and guns) and virtually all native Americans starting with no $$). NZ also was a fairly egalitarian society until the 1980s. It takes time for capitalism to gather momentum, and decades for a wealth-based class system to develop.

Tama - can we assume that there's almost no venture capital available ('cos nobody has $$$ sitting around to invest). If so, then the establishment of collectives (including socialist government ventures) will be needed to provide expensive infrastruture [if nobody has more that $26,000, then nobody owns the power stations, etc, right?]. Socialism will slow down the development of rich and poor extremes, firstly by resulting in slower economic development and secondly by redistribution of wealth through taxation and welfare.

With people's faith in the stock markets totally shattered, religious fundamentalism will surge ahead. Anyone selling bibles and rosary beads is going to make a killing.

It may be half a life-time since I did 5th form economics, but I read the papers. I know what's going on... :paranoid:
