The Most Dangerous Cycling Roads In Christchurch

Postby businesstime on Fri 29/Aug/08 6:37pm

Please nominate your "no go" roads for cycling in Christchurch. If we can highlight the notoriously bad roads for those not in the know it may help reduce some of the carnage we have had recently.

My first nomination is

The entire length of Ferry Road in Christchurch.

Numerous cyclists have come to grief here with the most recent one being the legend mulitsporter steve gurney who was KOd and broke a collarbone.

The alternative.

Bridal Path- Port Hills (take care under overbridge) Centaurus Road or Linwood Ave if you have to head the other way.

Cheers

Yea johns road isnt very nice, Colombo can be a bit sketchy with all the buses going up and down there.

Manchester St and Riccarton Rd. Manchester is full of Muppets and down Riccarton thru the mall where cars obscure pedestrians jay-walking. Worst is buses who open their doors without pulling in and people leap out in front of you.

Not surprised to read in paper about a schoolboy whose bike was trashed by a bus and the pricks at the Bus company haven't paid for repairs.

Colombo st between Brougham St and Moorehouse ave is a shocker, especially the bus lane on the overbridge.

I don't ride on Johns rd because of the number of people that drive over the white line on the left around the bends. I followed a van yesterday that was driving with their wheels almost in the grass.

Totally agree with that stretch of road..

Another one that is pretty dodge is the highway heading toward Motukarara where the sweeping bends have about 25cm from the white line (ie edge of the designated lane) to the grass on the side of the road.. not fun.

As with the Ferry rd thing, I was a matter of millimetres away from being another statistic there a couple weeks back - traffic had stopped and high roof van waved a taxi through a side street. I locked up the brakes, taxi did too, tyre smoke everywhere and I had a new brown stripe in my shorts. Normally I get quite angry toward guilty drivers at close calls, but this was so close I actually went into shock!
Perhaps there needs to be a campaign to raise awareness amongst drivers about waving vehicles through to check for cyclists coming down cycle lanes, as it seems to be a prominent theme.

Good shit by the taxi driver stoppin tho! I don't get it that ppl just boost it as soon as sum1 waves em thru ESPECIALLY wen theres blatently a cycle lane there, they should check it anway. But guess that aint gona change unless every1s forced to ride bikes b4 there allowed in cars.

Agreed. But how do you go about that. Its a difficult one to raise awareness on. Its not just Ferry Road but any major road where traffic comes to a standstill with side streets.

Any of the 4 aves, especially Bealy on the city side. When there are parked cars you have to ride part the way into traffic and the cars pass you so close! At least some of moorehouse has cycle lanes. Although I did put a submission through to the CCC about putting cycle lanes on the 4 aves and all the main roads in within the 4 aves.... They replied back to me saying that the head of cycle lane thingees is going to get in touch with me. Nice

Lol.. they aren't muppets, they are called ladies of the night... opps you mean during the day... :D :D

For me the old waimack bridge.. while most drivers are good accross it, there is always the odd one that trys to squeeze past, and it is not helped with no where to escape and a bloody great kurb on the side.

QE II and Marshlands roundabout as well during commute times as well.

Similar thing hapned to me on thursday on Colombo - just beside the mobil garage at sydenham. someone waved a 4wd with a 35-45 yo driver; who looked at me then just pulled out infront of me - I swerved and managed to miss it. I had to restrain myself or the car would have been missing a few mirrors and needed some panel work.

Everyone seems so angry about "Boy Racers" and happy to use them as a scapegoat - but if a "good citizen" runs you over you can still die.

my vote would have to be for the section of dyers pass rd from the takahe to the kiwi - normally fine, but for about 1hr every day I reckon it's the riskiest road to ride on ever - turkeys trying to squeeze past, overtaking on blind bends and generally just trying to take you (and any oncoming traffic) out

seems if you're rich enough to live in governors/diamond harbour things like patience, sanity and courtesy are optional :(

Colombo will be sorted by a bus/cycle lane and Riccarton is on the cards for the same treatment. Don't hold your breath!!!

Summit road - those F#%king idiot cyclists who are determined to ride two abreast - I am sure that one day I am going to collect one and they will deserve it. Works both ways you ignorant A HOLES ( you know who you are ) . And if that is not bad enough they try to race you on the way down AFTER you have caught them up because they are going so much slower - and then they get on here and complain about drivers of Vehicles , give it up tossers and play by the rules :hmmm:

Rant Over

[quote="slowMTB"] Summit road - those F#%king idiot cyclists who are determined to ride two abreast - I am sure that one day I am going to collect one and they will deserve it.

Why do they deserve it when the law says they can ride two abreast ??

Thats exactly the attitude that kills cyclists on the roads every year in NZ. "oh ill pass this cyclist but if I hit him he deserves it"

No wonder cyclists are dying on our roads. When is the last time a motorist died because of a cyclist ?

Sure some courtesy appllies. If your riding two abreast and the road is narrow and a car is approaching from the rear I would drop back iinto single file.

But comments like yours do no one any favours. No won deserves to lose there life over it because a tosser like you got impatient and wanted to save himself 5 seconds.
