Thats a beuty that one. I have reported it to the council several times. there excuse......

The shops need the parking.

Thats fair enough, but why does the traffic need 2 lanes, its only 1 lane prior to that intersection.

Report a near miss to the council using this form http://www.ccc.govt.nz/cycling/cyclesafely/collisionreport.asp
I know its for collisions, but near misses count in my book.

This link has useful suggestions on how to avoid cars. It's all back to front, being based in America, but I'm sure you can transpose.

My two cents worth...

Johns Road and Marshlands road are the ones I find really bad especially the old main north road bridge.

As for the comments about riding two abreast, we kiwis can be far too impatient. We have to try and be first at all costs. Although when I ride to the kiwi if we hear someone coming we move in to single file the road is not a private road and no one specifically owns it. Not everyone is out there to be the first across the line, some people are out to enjoy a leisurely ride. These people need encouragement as the more cyclists we have on the road the more the council and transit NZ will listen to us.

This is the publicity document, as you can see every effort is made to cater for cyclists. Like JB says, its the drivers that need changing not the roads.

But the roads are a start.

Here is how the intersection has been built. Fully open to all traffic now. Basically the only difference between what we built and this plan are the five trees in the central island (outside #1030) being omitted.

A couple of thoughts here. We are told that the Europeans are far more tolerant of cyclists and that bikes on the roads are given a good deal of respect. A friend of mine (Aussie but should have been Italian) drove Italian cars and spoke of the odd way that kiwi drivers tend to use their horn. We like to use it to launch abuse or complain about something, rather then using it to alert other road users of your presence, that you are behind them, about to pass, having a nice day etc. He used to use his horn before he passed folk. Mind you he drove his Alfa pretty fast. Another story was about a large bunch ride from the Pinnerello HQ in Italy. 100 or so riders, some pros, some shop owners from around the world checking out the new bikes. They were riding Italian country roads. Italian drivers (land of Ferraris and Alfas) waiting patiently for the opportunity to pass the group then tooting, waving, everyone getting along. So maybe toot politely next time you come across a group of riders to let them know you are there, then wait untill it is safe to pass, give them a wave. With the growth in cycling, a lot of us are relatively new to road riding and have some things to learn. Like when single file is just better and, if you gotta ride 2 abreast, be aware of whats going on around you. Be prepared to get out of the way when you here that friendly toot!

on the road? given the number of people riding now it's just not feasible - if it's someone I actually know I'll say gidday/wave (if I recognise them) - but if you did it to EVERY cyclist you'd never get anywhere

Yeap, more so on the road. It takes no effort to give a quick wave, nod or say hi.
