It goes both ways. Roadies who ride two abreast and have little tea parties really annoy me, do they want to get hit? Drivers who are determined to get as close as they can to cyclists are also just as bad.

I shuttle up dyers pass road and while the some of the cyclists can slow me down it's usually a slow car that slows me down more.

Common Sense:
If your a cyclist, keep to the left.
If your a driver, give the cyclists some room.

Dangerous intersections: heading into town - Main South Road / Springs Road intersection - There is no room for cyclists as the road narrows at the intersection. Many more to list some time soon. Alex.

You'll findr its the council not building the design as designed because of the costs. I take offence at that comment.

If it became compulsary when getting a drivers licence to spend at least 30 minutes on a bike riding in peak traffic on a section of open road, a big city arterial road, and big city CBD, then perhaps roads would be set up very differently in the future and drivers would drive quite differently around cyclists.

DD-Rick - Well I am sorry you feel offended. Bad design or bad construction hurt like hell when you break a collarbone. If you are a road designer and your designs are being compromised by cost constraints please send me the details so I can take your concerns to the Ecan Area Committee meeting to be held in October. Thanks Alex.

Not my designs in particular, but have you checked out Moorhouse Ave, Deans Ave and the new overbridge. That was a perfectly designed cycling route. Now, because of cost constraints, a cyclist wanting to travel from Moorhouse over the bridge to Blenheim, should, in theory, cross the road (somehow) to get to the cycle path, then again somehow cross back over once at Blenheim road. Its the small omitted details that make a complete cycle route, not just white lines on a road.

Great. I have ridden along there but it was not obvious where the cyclist was to ride so I went up the footpath on the left side. I will have another look at in the next day or so. As this is a very new construction that will be around for a long time it would be a good one to follow up. Is there anyone in particular I get in contact to get the original drawings and the as built drawings? My off Vorb email is alex@innovativesystems.co.nz

I had some input into the Ferry Road / Humphries Drive new lights and the redesign of the Ferrymead Bridge so it will be interesting to see what comes out of those busy intersections. Alex.

Until we change peoples attitudes that roads are for more than just cars then we'll continue to have issues, I'm not sure if more people would bike if they felt safer, people are just lazy, I say make all the roads unsealed so being on a MTB would be more practical

This is the publicity document, as you can see every effort is made to cater for cyclists. Like JB says, its the drivers that need changing not the roads.

But the roads are a start.

I have tried running into them and it is me that comes off second best so I need a new tactic. Alex.

Centaurus RD / Barrington St roundabout

And mini-roundabouts in general as car drivers often only check for tin boxes before steaming straight across

That's one of the reasons why the NZ driving age of 15 is so ridiculous. Kids stop riding a bike when they are 13 or thereabouts, because it's so uncool be be seen on a bike when you are just allowed to hoon around in a car. And you are not very mature when you are riding around 13 years or younger.
I reckon that if the driving age were much higher, then many more people would be aware of cyclists, because they were riding as young adults themselves. That's how you achieve the above.

How about a bit of central city fun? I vote for Kilmore Street westbound just past Barbadoes Street. Try that one in the morning peak.
