Drop off the Edge!
6/4/09 Media release – Bike Hawke’s Bay

You stand straddling your bike at the top and realise there are metres down from the top of the lip - the bank looks nearly vertical. Can you take the first step, conquer those fears and drop off the edge? You face that fear and throw yourself and your wheels off the edge. You feel the rush of flying through the air – wahoooooo – let the fun begin!

That’s the sensation kids from all over Napier are experiencing at the brand new Taradale Dirt Park. The recently created ‘Dirt Park’ is a hit for keen jump cyclists already. Not quite complete, the fully fenced park has been built by the Hawke’s Bay Mountain Bike Club with the help of the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. That didn’t stop fifty riders lining up on Saturday afternoon, all waiting to have a go. Located behind Pettigrew Green Arena, between the limestone Rotary Cycle/Walkway and the river it’s a hit already.

“Dirt Parks are simply shaped mounds of dirt for riders to jump and be creative doing tricks. It’s great to see so many kids out there enjoying the new park.” said Vicki Butterworth the Bike HB Cycle Development Officer. Designed with a starting ramp, leading into a series of three table tops, running into a bermed corner, through to a series of three roller coasters and up to the starting ramp again. The three table tops are tiered to accommodate riders of all abilities. They are a series of four levels starting with a beginning line and moving up to an advanced line. Depending on your riding ability it has been built so you can just ‘roll’ over the table tops or go faster to try getting some ‘air’. Many of those riders having a go are impressively doing so already.

The Hawke’s Bay Mountain Bike Club (New Zealand’s largest mountain bike club) recognised the need for dirt parks in urban areas. “Mountain biking especially bike jumps for young people is very popular” said Grant Gaston, Chairperson of the HBMTB Club. Numerous local authorities around the country have developed these relatively cheap recreational facilities – easily constructed and easily removed. Dirt parks in urban areas encourage young riders to make their own way to the park and not rely on Mum or Dad to drive them.

Taradale Community Constable John Gillon said “What a fantastic facility, it’s great and we are more than happy to regularly come down and patrol. It’s important that the kids wear helmets, for safety reasons. We will be patrolling to make sure they do.”

The Taradale Dirt Park was funded by Pub Charity. Its free for everyone use – anyone, of any age, with a bike and the desire to throw themselves off the edge. The official opening is planned for Sunday May 3rd, 12.00pm.
