Re: Talkback Tuesday: Vorb What To Develop Next?

Here's my thoughts.

Having topic title is a good thing. Especially in 'All posts' view. The first thing somebody who comes to the post page does is they have to decide what posts interest them and warrants them clicking on. The decision on what to click on is effected by the subject matter the 'topic title' and to a lesser extent the number of views or replies.

If you're presented with a thread titled 'General discussion' with 27,000 views and 50 pages of reply, you've got very little to go on. Unless of course you came to vorb specifically for a general discussion, which is probably true for a some of us. But I doubt that's why noobs pop in. And why are noobs so important? Well if we don't attract more noobs. Then all of vorb will eventually mature into a bunch of people who are old/broken/married/have kids and don't actually manage to find much time to do any "real" riding.

So the new topic button

Why is it at the top in existing threads, but if you look in posts rez_display.php?c=1&mode=posts

you need to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to find it?

Hah - You noticed I've been "improving" your posts. :D Yeah just grab the Garmin number (the number at the end of the url) and stick a [garmin] [/garmin] around it.

Therefore we should address noobs as "your highness", laugh uproariously at their jokes and deliver fresh scones to their inbox.

It means people get to/ignore what they want a lot quicker.

The mechanics thread is a classic example, shitloads of good info in there, but good luck searching for it.

The barrier to entry for a new thread is a lot higher than adding to existing. It's a significant mental hurdle where many consider whatever they are asking/saying isn't important enough for its own thread.

So if there is a place (albeit continually revolving) for that then you encourage more discussion and more people feel comfortable posting.

Isn't that what Talkback Tuesday is? ;)

Interesting you bring that up; I always considered the Talkback Tuesday threads to be a targetted topic instead of general discussion.

A thing to develop - a "next" button which takes you to the next page in the thread rather than vorb search.

:withstupid:

The little page number buttons are too hard to press on a phone.

Also clicking the title could take you to the latest post instead of the first.

Do you use mini Vorb on your phone? The wee '>>' button takes you to the first post you haven't seen yet (if you're logged in). It's the bizz

The same >> button is also on the posts page after the topic title.

The mobile site has been optimised for those with fat fingers or small screens. :D It also has a next button which I agree is useful.

I shall make it appear on the main site.
