You can use ply so long as it is H3.4 boric treated and not LOSP treated which has a wax in it,but you may also use Villaboard or equivalent fibre cement sheet or a plaster board such as Gibb aqualine but no matter which you use you will still need to fully waterproof it using a credible waterproofing system and I would suggest you get some one good in to do this for you. as for the grout cracking all you need to do is to make sure the studs and nogs are as per the building code the studs must be at 400 centres

Well, it's a good question, but I strongly believe that it is best to rely on specialists when renovating a bathroom. If you hit it right, like me, they will help with everything. They will support you when it comes to design, buy materials and, finally, assembly. :)
