Burglars stole three mountainbikes valued at more than $15,000 from the front window of Richmond's Village Cycles this morning after using a rock to smash the glass. Village Cycles owner Jim Matthews said the bicycles were stolen about 4am. Mr Matthews said the burglars had chosen three "pretty good bikes". "It's the window we put our special bikes in."
The bikes had been in the window for a couple of months, but he did not know whether the thieves had targeted the bikes or simply taken the bikes closest to the window. The bikes taken were a charcoal Giant Reign 1 valued at $5199, a $6299 blue and silver Giant Trance X1 and a $5500 Trek EX8. All the bikes had dual suspension.
He was cleaning up the mess this morning. "It's just the inconvenience of it. We've got to get all the windows replaced," he said. "You try and do a good job and do what you can do around the place and you think, `is it really worth it?' at times." He had been in business 21 years and this was the fourth or fifth time he had been burgled, though it was only the second time someone had actually stolen anything.
Mr Matthews said he would be contacting Trade Me and second-hand shops in the region, but was not counting on being able to recover the bikes. "If someone offers to sell you a real nice sparkling mountainbike, let me know."
