So it's basically paraffin and mineral oil - sweet.

It means removing the seatpost or b/b requires not minding the smell of long dead fish. :alien:

Only problem, is that I can't find anyone who knows what LPS3 is! Need to re=proof my Gazelle and Bosomworth, and also do some maintenance on the Soulcraft.

Find an aircraft engineer, aircraft get plenty of LPS-3 thrown at them.

That fish oil stuff is good I used to use it on cars, but funnily enough 'odourless' fish oil..smells like fish!

200 - 210 GPa is pretty much the standard for steel MOE. Probably a better property to look at would be tensile strength as this can be enhanced with fancy alloying (sp?) and heat treatment - the higher the tensile strength, the thinner the wall thickness, and the more "springyness" that will be noticed when riding.

In that case according to Columbus, XCr has a Ultimate Tensile Strength of 1350 - 1250 MPa and a Yield Strength of 1000 - 900 MPa compared to the Spirit tubeset; UTS = 1050 - 1250 MPa & YS min 750MPa. Columbus also claims that XCr has a UTS/weight ratio better than Titanium and Aluminium. Relative thicknesses are 0.4mm XCr and 0.38mm Spirit.

I'm learning as we go here but I'm guessing these numbers add up to the 10% superior mechanical performance of XCr over other steel alloys claimed by Sig. Pegoretti.

and thanks for the preservation tips guys!

Have you seen inside the tubes? That's where rust is most destructive.

:) I’ve seen inside my frame and other old steel frames I’ve had over the years (I currently have 3 others) and the BB etc looked fine.

:) I found the bike test!

It’s an Enigma Ex CR. Made from Columbus’s Stainless steel XCR.
Custom built and with a carbon fork.
Fully built up with Campag it costs 3200 GBP.

For NZ$3k for frameset, that's a good deal. Full custom xcr.

:) You’re right it is especially compared with latest and greatest boutique carbon frames which will probably cost twice that.

They also only build them custom, which is good. I'm not sure I like steel bikes with smoothed / filed welds though - it tends to suggest the builder may have been a better filer than welder. That definitely not always the case, but has been my experience on occasion.

Check out this picture of how steel should be welded:
