Haast to Timaru would be doable (but well epic)

G . XC contacted me re your interest in a East Coast to West Coast MB ride. The route that we rode 3 years traverses the main divide via the Hope pass. Brief route description: You can kick off from ChCh, [or closer to Rangiora if you want], Loburn,Okuku pass, Lees valley, Okuku river to Virginia Rd, Mt Noble to lake Sumner Rd, cross upper Hurunui river, Hope Kiwi pack track to Hope Kiwi lodge, Hope Valley, over Hope Pass, Tutaekuri river,Trent river, Ahaura, Ikamatua, Blackball, Croesus Track, Barrytown. Had been thinking of organising a Brevet type ride later this year over this route which would also incorporate a return to the East coast using another route via Harpers pass. Interested? Will email map/route/more informative description if required. Hass

I don't think it has happened yet, although a bunch of people did more or less what he is planning, I don't know the whole route but I remember it involved heading up the hurunui and over the pass.

Spoke to Rod Hibberd [Blue dog] last night. Has a 5 year concession to run a MB race from Amberley to Hokitika via Harpers pass. Looking for sponsors and if all goes to plan will be held 2012.

Looking For Useful Tips...

Postby G on Tue 14/Dec/10 8:49am

So after ages of not doing anything we’ve roughed out a plan for the second annual xmas bike tour. It goes a little something like this (for those with knowledge or a map):

Leaving our car at a mates place in Cashmere at lunchtime
Through Marshland
Left at Clarkville
Along Eyrewell forest (camp here)
Oxford
Over Wharfdale track to Lees Valley
Okuku river (camp here)
Past the Brothers
Haydon Downs
Mt Noble
Lake Sumner (camp here)
Hurunui River
Engineers camp on corner of SH73
Inchbonnie
Moana (camp here)
Brunner
Blackball
Up and down the Croesus (sans trailers)
Blackball Hilton (stay here)
Greymouth (onto Transcenic back to Chch)

The aim is to use as few roads as possible to traverse the mainland. We’re fully open to improvements that you may have for better trails or trails to avoid, just remember we’ll be hauling all our gear on trailers (kinda like the BOB ones) they’re pretty competent but I don’t want to have to portage things too far if possible.

Cheers

Macdonald Downs and The Brothers Station are owned by the same people.
