lost my iPhone 3G and replaced it with a Nexus 1. Nexus 1 is far better but only has 4GB microSD so you probably want more memory. Could do with more internal memory too, but nothing can be done there. My sister has an HTC desire which is slightly nicer in most ways. I think she got it grey import. I like the look and feel of the nexus, and you can modify the UI a huge amount!

I got used to the touchscreen only keyboard on the iPhone quite quickly, and the nexus 1 is touchscreen only too. It's not a problem at all. loads of good apps as well.

note my comparison is only to a 3G which I had for 2 years, iPhone 4 is probably much better than a 3g too. But I imagine you have to jailbreak it to do anything fun.

Android 2.1 or upwards is OK, don't touch anything lower.
2.3 (gingerbread) is due imminently, and 3 (Honeycomb) before too long. NZ telco's are crap at bringing Android phones in. Generally you are a generation behind the rest of the world, although they do seem to be waking up and improving a bit recently.
Echo what a previous poster said - you will get fed up with resistive touchscreens REALLY quickly.
I have an HTC desire, and its awesome in all ways except for 2. Screen is hard to see in bright sun, and battery life is average. But, I am a heavy user of it.

(Klarkash-ton - my missus has the iphone 4. Basically the same as the iphone 3G/S to all intents and purposes.)

I gots an LG Optimus. Seems like it'll do the job. The onscreen keypad is a bit dinky, but there's probably an app to fix that. Digging how Android marketplace is open, which allows for some somewhat more interesting apps than Apple's got :D

I've had a variety of smartphones over the years that have run a variety of platforms and quite frankly none of them come close to the iPhone for usability, flexibility, and all round capability.

You can be sure that "there's an app for that" sure as hell doesn't apply to many other phones once you get beyond movies, music, and photo apps.

I want smartphone. Will be spending a lot of time away from home/civilization/whatever next year and I'd like to stay connected. Pretty much worked out that I want a decent android phone, and almost certainly on 2degrees.

Looks like the Ideos and the LG optimus are the two options which may work. Anyone have any experience with either? Or any other reccomendations?

I want android, as opposed to whatever is on nokia phones. And I don't want an iPhone as I am somewhat intelligent and also I am a heterosexual.

Couldn’t you just write letters. I know – its old skool, but it still seems to work ok.
