I would like to know how people saw it back when single speed was normal and multiple gears were a new thing. Were multis seen as lustworthy techno-bling or as unnecessary, unmanly, unreliable etc?

Yes they were. Google Henri Desgrange.

What a guy! I just read the Wikipedia entry, it's full of goodness like "Legend says he was fired from (his job as a law clerk) either for cycling to work or for exposing the outline of his calves in tight socks as he did so."

I’m thinking Fixed might not be so bad :eh:

I’ve just had my freehub on my SS replaced – broken and yesterday the one on my geared by crapped out :(

The book “The Dancing Chain” looks like a good read about gears on bikes and such.

He fought for years to keep gears out of his Tour de France, only eventually allowing them in under protest in 1937 - the Tour had been going since 1903! I think unmanly was a word he used to describe his loathing for gears, and he certainly thought they weren't good for keeping the purity of the athletic endeavour of his great race...

Did the UCI base their love of halting technological innovation on his ideals?

I don't think it's a matter of halting technical innovation, more an at times misguided philosophy of keeping the playing field level. Lots of technical innovation has come out of road racing.
