The course they are proposing is the very first 7.5 km loop of the Black Stump course.
Real nice long fast grass downhill, then a bit of flat and a long, gradual uphill which is the perfect gradient for a ss. Then it's just back up that road section that was the very first climb for the Black Stump race (from the start).

Would be a good blow out before the ss worlds too.

I beg to differ, Garth. ;)

BUT, I would be pretty keen on a SS event out there too. More interested in a 6 hour, and would prefer a team (otherwise I might just create my own beer shortcut).

Hmmm... 1 August?? Bring your mud tyres, people!

I think we can provide a beer tent - not sure about the shortcut tho :D
Where's your sense of adventure Mel - I would have had you down for a 12hr solo with NO shortcuts :sly:

meh - always rains there for the Black Stump when it is summer everywhere else so it is bound to be fine

What would be your 29er gearing for this event Mel?

Don't ask me!!! :butbut:

I run the standard 32:20 that came on my bike - about the same as 32:18 on a 26" bike. Pretty good for Rotorua, etc. Gearing is such an individual thing though... Garth reckoned the long gradual climb at Black Stump was a perfect grade for SS, whereas I walked A LOT of it*. And I bet Garth was running a taller gear than 32:20 on his 29er.

* Disclaimer: I was very out of shape and just don't ride enough hills at all!

id say 32 20 would have been perfect on a 29er. I was running a 33 20t and it could have been a fraction easier I had to push up a few of the really steep bits.

I'll front to :paranoid: After all its not far away for me (at last).
Need thorg to come up for this also and Jim.

Now first weekend in August does that mean the 31st July and 1st August or 8th and 9th August?
The RATS Duathlon series finishes on the 8th. Though I'm guessing not everyones going to be happy with what ever date is set.

I ran the equivalent of the 32:20 that Mel was running due to the hillier sections of the remainder of the course.
For that first loop it was sweet.

If I was going to do it solo then maybe 1 gear lower would be suitable.
just pick a gear that you can ride the start climb in comfortably.

Now to convince Jim that this is a good idea. . . . .

What is black stump event pricing like? Any more details yet? Seems like there could be enough interest to start firming things up a bit :eh:

Hi great to see the interest in the event. We are now going through the logistics of running and the costing of the event. We always endeavour to give a value for money experience. Our biggest concern is limiting the event to single speed, we may not get enough competitors to make the event financially viable. We have a few unique ideas to bring to the event to make it fun and a bit different. Nothing Graeme likes better than to torture mountain bikers, but we've heard you single speeders are up for it! We are really excited about putting on this event - so watch out for further details in the near future!
