Rd: Simon And Sifter Ride Round The Block

Postby sifter on Thu 25/Oct/07 6:43pm

This event has been moved to 24 October 2009, to coincide with 350.org's International Day of Action.

Join cyclists as they ride 350km on 350.org's International Day of Action. Depart Upper Hutt at 1 minute after midnight, and aim to be back in Wellington, 350km later, by 3:50pm.

We need to ride at about 25km/h, including stops. See http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/new-zeala ... 0656692867 for route, and this thread for updated information and (potentially inane) discussion.

--------------
Simon and sifter are doing the Taupo Enduro this year on November 24. That's 2 laps round Lake Taupo, a mere 200 miles, or 320km.

In preparation, those mad bastards are going on a wee jaunt around the Tararuas. The plan is to leave Upper Hutt early on Saturday 10 November, ride over the Rimutakas, north through the Wairarapa, over the Pahiatua track, then south to Waikanae via Shannon, and back to Upper Hutt via the Akatarawas. They have no idea of the distance, but figure it'll take quite a while. They'll aim to average just under 30km/h for the trip, so will be nice and sifty most of the time (just for a long time).

Anyone wanting to join in the fun, keep an eye on this thread. Escorts south on the Kapiti side will be most welcome! Timetable will be posted closer to the time, and with any luck updated on the day.

If the weather looks like it'll be complete shite, we may move to Sunday.

I've just had a play on Bikely, and it reckons it's about 250km. I think it might be ignoring a few squiggles though!

The Tar Babies did it a few weeks back (over 3 days). They did a bit of a detour into the Wairarapa on the first day, but the rest of it will be close to what your planning.

day 2 Greytown to Palmy via Paihiatua Track- http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/new-zeala ... /651866775

day 3 Palmy to Welly via Akatarawas-

Bear in mind that they stopped for lunch each day I think. Still averaged around 150km a day.

I reckon if you stick mostly to SH2 going up through the Wairarapa your loop will be around 320 - 350km which should be a good day's outing.

Sifter is no longer an appropriate name to go by Mr Randal. You're a sick puppy.

I might be down that weekend actually, so I'll chuck a bike in the car and ride out and chaperone you both back in the last 60km.

we're going to start and finish at Harcourt Park or thereabouts, so cutting out the Welly-Upper Hutt return distance (at least I hope that's what your figure includes...)

Musket, that would be awesome!

Oli, my solo 200km rides have been 27-28km/h, so hopefully a bit quicker with 2?

Yeah I was factoring in the distance to town. So you should be around 300km at most.... still insane though. ;)
