I have some laminated topo maps at home for this ride if you want to borrow them.

Unfortunately, I am out of town that weekend so can't try and sneak onto your ride!

From memory it is all pretty staight forward

Picking up the single track to drop down to the river just past the Waiotauru hut took a coupe of minutes.

But it was sweet singletrack once we found it.

A little bit of debate on whether following the river a bit further or scrambling up to the track that has the washouts. I think the high line is the way, although there was a small loss of sense of humour dragging the bike through supple jack infested bush.

And there was a late on the hut / bach on the Mangaone Walkway where right was right way to go.

Ho Ho Ho. I am seriously rooted...

Same ride as last week, but up Mangaroa Hill instead of Wallaceville and SH2 back to Karori instead of train from Waterloo...

The numbers: 1760m climb over 156km, time from door to door about 6:05. One stop of about 5-10 mins @ Pauatahanui. A couple of other short stops. About 26km/h average including breaks....

Did I mention that I'm rooted?

I mapped yesterday's ride just now. Mapmyride agrees almost to the kilometre with my Garmin Edge...

Also - here's the height profile. I'm quite amazed at how much climbing there is in Whiteman's Valley...

I think these are starting to pay off.

We did 6 this evening, which improved my mood slightly over the foulness I had while biking out of Karori in the worst of the rain. We'd planned to do Hawkins Hill a couple of times, so Simon had his NRS at work. I pleaded for the relative shelter of Mt Vic, and we did our first from Wellington College, up the gutbuster and along the ridge up to Byrd Memorial. The next was from Kio Bay, and then we rode down the singletrack to Palliser Rd and down the zigzag by the monastery to the beach. Hay St sucked even on the MTB - I don't know how we contemplated going up there on the roadies, and Simon rode the whole thing in 39xsomething.

Number 4 was from Hataitai shops up Rakau Rd, and for 5 we rode to the town side of the bus tunnel and up Majoribanks and a funky (offroad) climb which zig-zagged up the side of the hill and against the flow on the PNP course for quite a bit. The 6th and last was Aro Valley, up the zig zag off Nelson (?) to Plunket St, before heading home. My altimeter was struggling with the weather tonight, but it looked to be about 1100m for the ride...

Since the weekend, my weight's been consistently 2.0kg down on this time a fortnight ago...

On the weight thing, I'm sure going from 5 commutes a week and maybe a 2 hour ride in the weekend, to 5 commutes plus the hill session, plus maybe a 2 hour ride, plus a long ride is making a huge difference. But, I'm also working pretty carefully on my diet. Switching from homo milk to trim cafe coffees seems so damn obvious I wonder why I didn't do that years ago. Also, I've been trying to cut down on snacks, reasonably successfully, and reduce portion sizes at dinner. Oh, and no dessert...

I feel like my throat's been cut most of the time, but it's getting easier to handle...

I used to drink plain homo milk. Now I drink Super Trim, which is obviously for athletes and straight folk.

Awesome to hear you're back smashing the roads Sifter
