For hilarity, best you go read about Oli's ride...

http://www.vorb.org.nz/ftopicp-1327711.html#1327711

I did manage to get out today, and am now in that funky post-hard-ride-and-two-quick-beers stupor.

Simon came round at about two, and after laughing at the censored photo in the Karapoti results, we headed up Makara Road. We passed the spot where the logging truck lost its rear wheel over the edge, and a couple of logs down into the bush by the looks of it. Simon got sick of my nana riding, and shot past me about 2/3 of the way down. We rode side by side most of the way to Johnsonville, battling the strong northerly, and the inclines.

At J-ville, we bypassed the two roundabouts via a side street, and headed towards Khandallah. Just beyond the old folks' home, with the wind at our backs, I put in the first "wee" dig, and we shot past the speed alert sign reading "Slow now!" I attacked again up to Box Hill, and them Simon swung by down into Ngaio. I passed him again just before the shops, and worked a bit too hard through to Crofton Downs. I knew I was in trouble by the time we got to the private hospital whose name escapes my alcohol fueled and fatigued mind...

I used my superior bulk to generate as much momentum as possible down to Otari Stream, only for Simon to attack as soon as it got steep, and just before I started pedalling! I swung onto his wheel, and instantly started to hurt. We both started flicking madly through the gears. I was no longer hearing nice controlled gear changes with the cranks spinning, but rather urgent shifts under load. I swung in front again, and grovelled up the last bit of the hill, fighting back the urge to vomit. As soon as it flattened off, I sat right up, and made the most of the lack of resistance against my legs. Simon came by about 10 seconds later, and I had to surge to stay on his wheel.

Soon after, we rode side by side down to the Karori BMX track, where Simon peeled off to his home in Northland, and where I should have swung up towards Karori, ending the ride at a notch over an hour and a quarter. Instead I foolishly rode up to the Karori tunnel, down past the gardens, and along the waterfront to Oriental Bay.

I was still feeling enthusiastic about cycling when I rounded Point Halswell, and with the wind at my back (at least in theory) I went hard around the bays. I was consicous of a car just behind me - I'd get some space at the corners, but not much. It finally passed me in the straight past NIWA, and by then I was done... It only got worse and worse.

The headwind around Shelly Bay was heinous, and my legs had started to feel leaden. I stopped for a couple of minutes at my Gran's place near Worser Bay, then continued around Breaker Bay. I'd been dreading the airport straight, but it was nowhere near as windy, or as long in duration as I'd been fearing. Happy Valley was hard work. I had a brief chat to a guy who's just moved down from Tauranga, and was enjoying exploring the city on his roadie. Apparently the riding's better here than Tauranga :) I invited him to tuck in, but lost him just before the Brooklyn lights. Aro Valley was hard work, but more my cup of tea, and it was bloody nice to get home for a shower.

****

I'd told Oli this morning I thought that the seat was in a funny position because I'd had pain when I rode the bike last. Turns out I'm going to have to go see a nurse next week to get a massive purple boil on my arse lanced  Not much fun riding with that, with the contact point just at the edge of the seat. 3 hours in the saddle today didn't do it much good, that's for sure...

 That will do it, bro! You know boils are a sign you're a bit run down, eh? You should button off for a week or two just to catch back up - let's face it, you've been going hard for a long time now, on top of LOTS of work...

Sounds like just the kind of ride I would love

IF I WAS 20 YEARS YOUNGER!!! :D

Great write-up, bro. :)

just a little bit slower than me ;) Seriously though, very nice pace. Plenty of turn-taking at the front. Good conversation until I attack at the bottom of Happy Valley
