Show Us Your Vege Garden

Postby Tinkerbell on Tue 29/Mar/11 8:51pm

I recently become obsessed with growing my own food (in a natural disaster your local shops might fall down!) and have converted most of our tiny back yard to vege gardens. I'm also blogging about it on the Yates website (for those interested in such things). http://www.yates.co.nz/vegie-challenge/ ... tinkerbell

Anyway here are some of my gardens

Here's our little effort from earlier in the summer. Still trying to strike the right balance for qty's of lettuce, but nothing beats wandering out there to pick some fresh lettuce for your sammies! Have just planted some winter seeds. Onion, Carrot & something else

Here's the raised gardens i built some months(November I think) ago outta broken vineyard posts and 2nd hand fence palings ...i painted and lined with plastic sheet to stop/minimise chemical leeching etc, also helps stop earth slipping through the gaps.

its a bit of a shambles at the mo...needs a clean out...had a massive crop of tomatoes(still some on the plants),cucumbers, chillis, lettuces, carrots, strawberries(more fruit at the mo ?) basil and other herbs... :)

The square garden in the foreground is the "herb garden"...a mate ripped out a fence at his place and gave me the palings 1.80m long.

Broken vineyard posts trimmed up to 1.80m...did it all with a chainsaw.

the potatoes in the tyres didn't work for us...real poor crop and they died early...will try again next season.

Cheers Jo and HB...
just some advice about paint,..i was gonna use Timbercryl($160+)
http://www.mitre10mega.co.nz/shop/paint ... er_360674/
...its a great fence paint and it lasts for yonks..but in the end bought some much much cheaper paint...
http://www.mitre10mega.co.nz/shop/paint ... ny_357217/

the v helpful lady at Mega was telling me how I'll have to paint it far more often...i said "look this cheap paint has got to last at least 2 years ?...at that price i can probably paint it 3-4 times for the price of 1 x timbacryl.

I x 10l of Wattyl did 2 coats on the entire raised garden (i painted inside the beds as well)...

cheers, happy gardening :)

Hmmm if it's from a vineyard and old fences it'd probably be treated timber anyway. Might have survived OK on it's own for a decade or so.... :D

it is all treated..i didn't fancy ingesting the crap they put into the timber...here in Marlborough down Rarangi way, near the coast, you can't drink water outta the wells...Council says its arsenic from vineyard posts...we have millions of them here.

Besides..i prefer black (ebony) edging...kinda less noticable once the plants get growing. :)

Our 4th summer season now taking off:
At the front: strawbs, tomatoes, a few chillies , 2 rows of broccoli, beetroot.
At the back: sweetcorn, cucumber, spuds and heaps of sunflowers that the kids grew from seed. Have already pulled leeks, spinach, lettuce and peas.
Next move is to erect greenhouse, then expand out with raised beds (maybe using scrap corri iron?)
Still don't know what I'm doing, but the plants don't seem to care
