Shoes For Wide Feet?

Postby skaffen on Tue 16/Mar/10 9:12am

Can someone recommend MTB shoes for super-wide feet? My feet are freakishly wide at the base of my toes, even more so since I broke both feet kite surfing a few years ago.

Currently using Oakley Radar Locks, but in order to squeeze my plates of meat in, they are a size too big and my heel lifts when hike-a-biking.

I'm thinking something without a rand that'll mould around my forefoot maybe? If they have room for orthopaedic insoles, all the better.

Cheers :)

I have size 14 feet & although they are wide, I would not consider them "freakish".
I wear specialized mtb shoes & find them comfy, although I am in the market for a new pair. Sidi & Lake were other brands mentioned when I asked the same question a few years ago, although they seem hard to find stocked in shops.

The specialized shoes seem to be reasonably wide. Most of the European shoes are narrower in standard sizing - saying that, they usually have an EE or EEE available, but they tend to be a special order.
Just got some Lake shoes and they are of a decent width.

I also have wide feet and narrow heels - currently using a pair of specialized shoes which I find good. Previously I had some Lakes which were also good. I've got a riding mate who has seriously deformed feet with big bunions on the inside the ball of his foot and also finds the Lakes good.

SIDI do a range of their shoes called "Mega" which are wide lasts. The sidi's are fantastic, and the most ergonomic shoes on market. The adjustable heel cups are awesome. Get shoe wide and long enough, then adjust the cup so your heel is snug.

I too suffer from ultra-wide feets. My Specialized road shoes are the most comfortable bike type shoes I've had. So much so that I'd automatically go for Specialized mtb shoes when the need next arises.

Not always a good assumption babs. My LG road shoes are awesome fitting, but my LG MTB shoes pinch like hell on a long ride.

Well, I would probably still try them on first  - I have heard that they're also good for wide feet though.

Lake make mtb shoes on the wide end of ths scale, but you sound like you need something custom.

I read that because Lake make a wide fitting shoe their "normal" shoe is a little narrower than most. Also that the wide one is not as wide as some folk would like. Also, note that Lakes fit tighter for a given Euro size than others, even tighter than SIdi.

Do you mean the heat activated custom ones , or is there someone in NZ that'll do custom shoes?

Thanks for all the info so far. Any recommendations for shops in Hams or Auckland that have a good range available?

Diadoria work for my fat feet. Lake were too narrow as were Specialized although I think the new Specialized have a wider fit.
